freeflir29 0 #2 May 30, 2002 Nice...thats what we need...more military folks getting themselves killed over some idiots that got lost on Mt Rainier. Great...."Here I come to save the BOOBIES!"
Shark 0 #3 May 30, 2002 bummer. sounds like the crew is okay, but the climbers they were to rescue didn't fare as well.
skreamer 1 #4 May 30, 2002 Yeah, you're right, I bet none of those idiots ever paid taxes. What were they thinking, expecting the military to help them? I bet they did it on purpose just to get a free ride in a nice army helicopter. And as for those people always getting into trouble at sea and expecting the coast-gaurd to help them? selfish selfish selfish...."Look before you jump, don't die until you're dead"
quade 4 #5 May 30, 2002 As long as the climbers or sailors pay for the rescue services, then I have nothing against it, but when unqualified people do silly things and then need the government to come to the rescue, why should we all have to pay for it?Recently in Southern California we had a guy get "lost" in the mountains and there was a fairly substantial rescue effort to find this guy. How in the name of Smokey the Bear can any adult get "lost" these days? $100 bucks and a good supply of batteries makes getting from point a to point b damn near fool proof.BTW, I just saw a promo come over the satellite, ABC World News Tonight is doing a story that will air tomorrow (Friday) about who should pay for rescue efforts, the rescuees or the taxpayers -- total coincidence! Actually not, it's what we call an 'evergreen' story. Usefull just about any time the topic comes up and it almost always does at the start of summer.quadehttp://futurecam.com
AndyMan 7 #6 May 30, 2002 QuoteNice...thats what we need...more military folks getting themselves killed over some idiots that got lost on Mt Rainier. Great....Yeah, and I'm sure there's an awfull lot of people who say the same thing about our medivacs and town paramedics when we burn in, or the coast guard when we land offshore. The US coast guard saved my ass once, and I was in Canadian waters. They just happened to be closer.SAR is a good thing, no matter what the conditions. My thoughts are with the family of the injured pilot and the the unfortunate adventurers. _AmICQ: 5578907MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfeYahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
freeflyguy 0 #7 May 30, 2002 Quoteidiots that got lost on Mt RainierAnd another thing. This story is about Mt Hood, in Oregon. The Mount Rainier thing is a different story. That one started on Wednesday. Of those 4, 3 are dead, one walked out. I saw the Chinook that was helping recover the bodies fly by Kapowsin a while ago.Sad, but I am glad the government is willing to risk their lives to help. If they weren't they would just tell people they couldn't enjoy the mountains. That would suck. So sad, but thanks to the guys that tried to help, and the politicians that let them do it. It might be me one day.
Billy 0 #8 May 30, 2002 Dam some of ya are touchy,,These boys fly missions like this often,, they know the risks involved and consider rescues like this as on the job training for there active role in the military,, look at the terain in Afganistan were involved in... I was at a hoist rescue training demo at the military firing range near Yakima WA last month and talked at length with a Blackhawk crew,, they love there job and we work together with them often on shit like this in the Cascades and other terrain we can't get into with our helo's,, I pray for a speedy recovery for all involved.. as far as the climbers,, I climbed Ranier and it's a high risk sport for sure,, scary shit,, but they aren't necessarily idiots,, (people say the same about folks jumpin outta airplanes for fun) the Paramedic who survived and called for help has probably risked his life on occasion without worrying about who's gonna pay for his efforts,, ,, the costs are a problem and many places do bill the victims and you can also get rescue insurance,, but keep in mind most rescues aren't for climbers in the national parks,, there for joe pubic who isn't prepared or trained in any outdoor adventure.. sorry to rant but this hits close, Mom called from AZ to make sure I was ok and nobody I knew was involved
kmcguffee 0 #9 May 31, 2002 Sorry to hear this. I hope the one injured crewman pulls through. "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go."
quade 4 #10 May 31, 2002 Just saw the ABC World News Tonight story about who foots the bill for rescues like this. Pretty good.Nightline is also going to cover a discussion about this tonight.quadehttp://futurecam.com
Iflyme 0 #11 June 1, 2002 QuoteNice...thats what we need...more military folks getting themselves killed over some idiots that got lost on Mt Rainier. GreatIdon't think it is appropriate so characterize people who enjoys extreme experiences (skydivers as well as mountain climbers) as "idiots"... in my area there is more of a problem with snowboarders going out of bounds, then getting lost and/or hurt, and requiring rescue. I think these people should pay the entire cost of their rescue, but the 3 groups that were climbing Mt Hood were not violating any safety guidelines...
