Jasmin 0 #52 June 6, 2002 I hear 'ya. History repeats itself, its only the players that differ. This antagonism between these two countries, and in fact these two peoples, is not new. Take into account the centuries of conflict and hatred between them and put this flare up into a little perspective.Today its Pakistan and India, tomorrow who knows....Russia and China maybe? We thought the Cold War would be the undoing of us all, and it nearly was. This is not a new conflict, this animosity is not based on some new concept that we haven't seen before. Perspective peoples, perspective. The ones we hear about are often the ones we shouldn't really be worrying about. Individuals or corporations taking on nation states? Now THAT scares me! PhillyKev 0 #53 June 6, 2002 QuoteTo paraphrase yourself where did I do that? You didn't. Bellyboy did. Sorry for the confusion. I was replying to you, replying to me, replying to him. Your opinions, which everyone is entitled to, seem to be voiced in an intelligent and non-biased way.His were inflammatory and offensive. He also has a right to voice them, and I have a right to be pissed off when I hear it, and a right to say what I think of his opinion. That's one of the things I love about this country.FYI...No taxation without representation was one of the rallying cries used in the revolution against Britain. And that point was that British citizens were being denied a representative in parliament. Slightly different than a foreign national coming here by choice (invited or not). You have the option to leave and stop paying taxes, or apply for citizenship. The colonials didn't have those options.cielos azules y cerveza fría-Kevin

bellyboy 0 #56 June 6, 2002 Cheers Kevin,At least you've got the knackers to support your opinions - I , like Nacmac am an invitee to this country and love being here , I've also lived in some of the crappiest corners of the world and as a consequence have a rather dim view of global capitalism. What you're reading from me is my reaction to what I've seen , not an opinion based on what I've heard. I don't single out the US as the only country guilty of rape (Japan , Germany , the UK , France - all are up there) - next time you nip out to WallMart for a VCR though ask yourself where it was made , ask yourself why that's not the USA , and then take a long hard look at whether the disparity in wages across the globe can really be maintained given that domestic jobs have been traded by the large corporations for short term gains in margin. THAT's the real reason so many people across the planet dislike the 'Western world' etc , it's the corporations that represent them , and the policy they drive governments to adopt. Thanks for reacting to my 'inflammatory' comments - I seek only to counter the equally inflammatory comments made by someone else , and spark debate. I respect your opinion, and you're right , that is one of the best bits about this country , provided it's supported.Fishy.
PhillyKev 0 #57 June 6, 2002 Cheers back. In regard to Walmart...been there once to buy a bracket to hang a rolling blind, only because it happened to be next door to the place I bought the blind. I avoid places like Walmart, etc. for the very principles you stated. I try to buy Made in USA whenever possible, lacking that I try to buy items made in a country that promotes fair wages and workers' equity (my car is Japanese). However, I do think that the corporations using cheap labor in 3rd world countries does have a benefit to those countries and those workers. In most of these places, the workers are not forced to work there, but it turns out to be the best opportunity available to them. Could the corporations afford to provide for them better, yes, and morally, I think they should. However I don't think the US governement, or America, is to blame. It's the policies of those local governments that make it possible for corporations to get away with what they do. If governments around the world would stop hindering entrepeneurship and the opportunity to be rewarded for hard work (by stifling idea, creativity, and freedom) than I believe everyone would be much better off.cielos azules y cerveza fría-Kevin
freeflir29 0 #58 June 6, 2002 Amen PhillyKev. You can't blame the corporation for trying to make money. If the foreign governments aren't taking care of their people then the people should do something about it. "Here I come to save the BOOBIES!"
