Sports Collisions on TLC!!!

Recommended Posts

I was just watching the Learning Channel and a program called Sports Collisions. They had on an AFF student dive where he cutaway a seemingly perfect canopy fairly low, but his reserve didn't open! He survived, but has anyone else seen this tape and can you explain this!!!!!! Of course the narrator made it seemed as though the student was absolutely TERRIFIED and that is why he did it. The narrator had no idea what all the practice 'pulls', etc. were all about either! Actually the student was interviewed and he said something like, he was heading for some buildings and he thought if he went with his reserve it would land him more safely!!!!! I'm sure this show will be repeated so if anyone sees it and can explain what the "heck" was this guy thinking!

What is "fairly low?" Did anything leave the container, like the pilot chute, or was it a total malfunction? He could have simply been too low for the reserve to deploy properly.
It makes for better TV to say "the reserve parachute failed to open," than it does to say, "it probably would have worked fine if he cutaway a few hundred feet higher."

I know this show will be repeated, so if you get a chance, watch it. Oh, I'm sure he was just too low for the reserve to open properly, but what do I know! He did survive the fall, so he wasn't that far off the ground, but I can't understand why he cutaway! The narrater was, oh....what do I want to say.....a real Whuffo!!!!! Made it sound like this jumper was absolutely terrified, by the look on his face in freefall. He may well have been scared but geez! He played it up!

Made it sound like this jumper was absolutely terrified,

Weird, usually people calm down when the canopy opens. If it was first jump it could of been a bad briefing, bad ground school or a bad learning student or plain stupidity. But am no instructor so I could be wrong in all of them.

If it was the black British guy at Sebastian I have seen it. He cut away around 200-300 Ft. The reserve was out of the bag but didn't have time to inflate fully. He got lucky with JUST a broken leg. He even says later how stupid it was. Sebastian is really windy and he was getting backed up. He panicked....
