RIP: my car

Recommended Posts

My 95 prelude bit the dust on the weekend. I just got the call from my mechanic, and the source of the vibrations coming from the engine is wear on the main bearings. Repair would mean completely ripping apart the engine to replace one tiny part deep inside, and set me back a few grand.
So scractch any thoughts of a weekend road trip... scratch any thoughts of the trip to Canada I was planing for next week, and off to to the dealerships I go.
I wonder what I'll get for a 7 year old car with worn bearings.... any thoughts?

1995??? Wow that was quick. What sort of milage is on it?
Oh and get it fixed. It is worthless as it is.
If the 'new' owner cannot test drive it he is certainly not going to take your word that the rest of the car is fine.

Dump a bunch of really heavy oil in the crankcase and hope whatever dealer you take it to doesn't immediatly realize what it is - Get whatever you can for it-
Helpful hint - Dealers can give more for trade against a used car vs. new car, and right now there is a glut of used cars thanks to the 0% financing blitz - You should be able to get a smokin' deal- Let us know how you make out!
Blue ones-

Pretty much what I have been thinking.
I find it hard to believe the bearings have gone on a 1995 model. Unless Andy has been lax with his oil changes....very lax. Or he has a very heavy foot.
Valve stem seals and rings go bye bye way before the main and big end bearings.
Andy. drain the oil yourself and see if there is any 'glitter' in it.
Wash the oil filter out with petrol and see what comes out.
A bearing which is on it's way out usually deposits quite a bit of metal into the system.
Personally I smell BS...just my 2c

Oh I almost forgot.
Is the car auto or manual.
Another easy check on a manual is to put it in 3rd or 4th and drive it up an incline at a lowish speed. In other words get the motor to labour a bit at the bottom end of the rev range.
Main bearing wear will manifest itself as a rumbling sound from the motor.
Big end were can be heard as a knocking sound at idle.
Not tapping...knocking.
A motor vibration could be a duff sparkplug or partially burnt valve. Hell it could even be shorting plug leads. Turn off the lights in the garage at night and run the motor. Do you see any sparking from around the motor HT lead system?
BTW Crooked mechanics piss me off....bigtime>:(

Andy - I just jumped in the same boat as you! Mine is a '95, too, with 117K miles. The head gasket blew and everything just went to hell from there. The mechanic says they won't even fix it because of the miles. "Just buy a new engine", they say. "Our low low bargain price of just $3600".
Work sucks. Let's skydive!

I know what your going through.
just got word from the mechanic yesterday that my volvo is
f*cked. The engine blew couple of weekends ago and once
they took the cylinder head off there was a chunk of one
of the pistons missing and the cylinder was badly gouged.
Whats the market price for a volvo without an engine ?

Hey, Andy! If you want, my uncle could take a look at it-since he knows a lot about cars and stuff (but that would require you to actually enter the state of Indiana). But, he won't charge you anything!!!
But she grew up tall and she grew up right, with them Indiana boys and an Indiana night

"Whats the market price for a volvo without an engine"
Wrong question John, perhaps you should consider its insurance value, y'know, how much would you get for it if it were stolen and torched for example?????;)
I'm not suggesting you try and defraud a noble institution like your insurance company or anything like that.......
Otherwise you might get 50 quid for it scrap value....:(

whatcha gonna get to replace it?

I'm not really sure.
There's an Audi A6 at work with my name on it, but the boss didn't really want to give it to me until the fall. I'm trying to accelerate that deal. NICE car.
Failing the Audi, I'm half tempted to buy something entirely WAY too practical. Maybe even a hybrid like Bill's. The problem is that when it really comes down to it, I'm a bit of a snob, and I do like NICE car's. So, I'm also thinking maybe a BWM 325 sportswagon, Audi Allroad, an Acura MDX (sport ute), Mazda Tribute, or a Nissan X-terra.
I'm definately buying new. Enough of this used car shit.

Bummer!
I can't believe no one's asked the obvious question - whatcha gonna get to replace it?

Hee hee....and I was kind of thinking that about your canopy....
As far as the car goes, I'd also get someone else to look at it. Several years ago when my car overheated near Seligman, AZ (another story), I was told that my head gasket was warped or something.....it was gonna cost a couple thousand to fix.....I took my car, and another garage in town hid it for me (from the first garage that was trying to charge me $50 to look at the car). Turned out the only problem was my thermostat.....of course I'm a girl travelling across country, and probably an easy target, but nonetheless....
It was pretty funny, though. Those guys were driving around looking for us. We hid for 3 days. One of the guys at the 2nd garage had half of his face blown off from a shotgun accident.....crazy....
you can live in happiness too, like the oompa loompa dooba de do....

kind of hard to say it's been stolen as half the engine is in the front
of the car and the other half is in the boot.
No point puting it all back togather since there is a snowballs chance in hell it would go.
I wish I had thought about the insurence when i was stuck on the hard shoulder of M40

Okay John, fek.....
Phone around and see if you can get a reconditioned engine, it sounds like you have scored the sleeve and trashed the piston doing so.
This is relatively easy to resolve, off with its head, take the cylinder block off and replace from there on up, including the piston, may as well replace the rings on the good ones whilst you are at it.

Well I got the word from the boss today... I can't have the A6 until the fall.... so I'm gonna go car shopping.
The short list is the BWM 325I Sports Wagon, the Audi Allroad Quatro, and the Nissan Xtera.
I might add one of the Subaru wagons to the list.
Thoughts anyone? Anything I should also consider?
