quade 4 #26 June 5, 2002 Saw it last night for the second time. This time in a theater for which the movie was actually designed -- DLP.Amazing.There were specific scenes in the digital to film print I saw on opening day that I was disappointed in. Disappointed in the colors, black levels and black detail. All of this was rectified by watching the DLP. And the scenes that looked pretty good in the digital to film looked absolutely freakin' amazing in the DLP. In particular very subtle textures and reflections of the ships in the opening sequence and the the colors of Coruscant -- they just blew me away.quadehttp://futurecam.com

They were ALL pretty hootchified! I was like, mmm, how conVEEEENient that the horrible beast ripped your shirt into a perfect midriff-baring top. WHATEVER. Heheh, it was a good flick. Anakin smirked too much, though. And the politics confused me. The spaceships were shiny, though. Ooo, pretty!
skreamer 1 #29 June 5, 2002 Another thing, I think that Haydn Christiansen's acting career is going to go just as well as Mark Hamill's. BTW did it bother anybody else that the young Darth Vader gets called 'Annie'??? Somehow it just didn't seem right. I reckon the chick getting killed shortly after giving birth to the twin (Luke and Leia) will be what pushes 'Annie' to the Dark Side. Darth Vader is a freeflyer? Cool!! Jessica 0 #30 June 5, 2002 QuoteDarth Vader is a freeflyer? Cool!! No way! ALL the Jedi were falling in the boxman! And Annie there was making some pretty badass sideslides, too, there in that chase sequence near the beginning. Way to avoid a freefall collision, you smirking freak! Zennie 0 #35 June 5, 2002 QuoteI reckon the chick getting killed shortly after giving birth to the twin (Luke and Leia) will be what pushes 'Annie' to the Dark Side.OK I'm going to show my Star Wars Geek stripes here but I don't think it'll play out that way. Remember in ROTJ when Luke asked Leia what his mother was like she replied that she didn't recall much, but did remember that she was "beautiful, but sad". We also know that Anakin didn't know about Leia until he sensed it from Luke. We've seen how Anakin reacted when his mother was taken from him. So my guess is somehow Padme is going to be taken from him by the Jedi. After all, relationships are forbidden so my guess is the Jedi are not going to react well to the marriage and pregnancy. Now she probably will wind up dying, since Leia's memory is so hazy that tells me Padme wasn't around long enough to raise her. So I dunno how this is going to play out. On the one hand, she has to be around long enough for Leia to at least have a brief memory of her. But at the same time, she probably won't be around Anakin to tell him about the children. Plus why would she voluntarily give up one of her children to be split up? Too many questions. We'll get the answers in afew years. billvon 3,120 #38 June 5, 2002 >Actually, Dave, I'm not wrong on the digital thing. I've heard that the digital> projection looks really nice and i'm sure it does (i am going to go into Chicago> sometime soon to see it for myself), but the fact is a movie shot on film, and >projected on film, looks better than a movie shot digitally and projected digitally.I have seen both - Qualcomm developed some of the technology for digital projection (the data transmission, compression, encryption and streaming stuff) and I've seen side by side comparisons. On a new projector with a "B-reel" print, film is better. In 99% of the movies as seen by the public (i.e. old but maintained projectors, 10th to 400th run of the movie) digital is way better.(Funny aside - the only movie they could get a B-reel print of was Tank Girl, which was our demo for a while. Of course the demo wasn't even really valid after the first 10 showings because the print became worn like any other film. As it was explained to me, a B reel is a print taken directly from the film master rather than a distribution master, but as I'm not a movie person I don't know if that's true.)>But the range of colors and tones that 35 mm or 70 mm film gives simply isn't> there.Brightness was the last remaining hurdle for digital projector technologies. Current generation projectors can match current film projectors; the next generation should surpass them. In terms of maximum blocking (i.e. how black you can make black) color saturation and fidelity it's measurably better than a projection film.-bill von

Snowbird 0 #40 June 5, 2002 Enjoyed it, but the writing was just too bad! I think the best thing Lucas could do for #3 is to hand his outline over to real writers and let them do their job. But he has a reputation for forcing actors to choke up his cheesy lines. Even Harrison Ford has admitted to objecting to the lines in the originals. My least favourite character this time around is Obi-Wan (sp?) Could he be any less interesting? Predictable? Boring? And that kid who played the young Boba Fett! Urgh! He was baaaad.I loved the politics of the story. Actually, the secondary story lines were much more interesting than the love story. And someone else mentioned to progressing darkness of music; that was a nice subtlety.Even though it wasn't as good as it could be, I've still gotta see it again! quade 4 #41 June 5, 2002 QuoteI reckon the chick getting killed shortly after giving birth to the twin (Luke and Leia) will be what pushes 'Annie' to the Dark Side.Uh, it was when he killed all the Sand People for killing his mother. At the point he decided to use his powers to wipe out an entire tribe of people -- not just the men, but the women and the children -- he turned the corner.Didn't you notice his theme music changed to Darth Vader's theme?quadehttp://futurecam.com
lummy 4 #42 June 5, 2002 I also really enjoyed the references to the old British Empire, Coruscant being the center of the Universe, the dialogue's (Ma'am, Yes M lady) Victorian costumes, expecially with Padme. Even Tattoine took on a feel of a Middle Eastern British outpost. One shot... HEY!!! Mas Tequila!!!! Two Shots HEY HEY!!!! Three Shots.......
quade 4 #43 June 5, 2002 Actually Bill, there was a "shoot-off" in Hollywood recently. Most people agreed that while a totally digital production flow looked very cool. However, if the movie was shot on film first and then transfered to digital, it did suffer in the black detail a bit.Totally digital productions such as Toy Story, Bug's Life, Monsters Inc. look absolutely amazing in DLP, but just as Episode II suffers from the digital to film transfer when you see it in a conventional theater, so does a film like Tank Girl suffer in the film to digital on a DLP screen. Yes, compared to the 10th showing of film the digital print wins hands down, but there is, in fact a bit of a gamma issue. It was stuff like this that I was specifically looking for a couple of nights ago. Also, and this isn't a real nitpick or subjective thing, this is something I can actually see and point out to people, there's still an issue with anti-aliasing. Under certain conditions, you actually can see individual pixels on the DLP screen. Contrast has to be in just the right range and lines have to be at just the right angles, but yes, you can see them.Still, way freakin' cool.Oh, and yes, B-prints are better than distribution prints. Distribution prints are at best 3rd gen from the neg. B-prints can be 2nd gen.quadehttp://futurecam.com

Also, some of the blue screening and matting isn't as quite as good as I expected, particularly around hair which is always difficult I suppose. On another point.....Anybody know if the guy who played Jango Fett was in another film called "Once were warriors" (from New Zealand)?Or can anyone give me his name so I can search it out myself.....CyaDGR# 37Remember how lucky you are to see and touch the sky; the blind may only dream. quade 4 #45 June 5, 2002 QuoteAlso, some of the blue screening and matting isn't as quite as good as I expected, particularly around hair which is always difficult I suppose. Yep. Hair is one of the most difficult things to get right. Works fine for the cgi characters like Yoda, because the matte is generated when they generate the foreground object, but hair on humans is a bitch especially if it's light hair as in the case of Obi-wan. Also a bitch to key correctly are smoke and glass.quadehttp://futurecam.com

nacmacfeegle 0 #47 June 5, 2002 "Also a bitch to key correctly are smoke and glass."Yup, but as with anything that is essentially fractal or natural looking, it can be cropped out and replaced in CGI, but then again, I'm sure the guys at Industrial Light and Magic know better than me.I was just a little disappointed it didn't look that impressive. What stuck in my mind was the scene before the freefalling with Obi Wan against the cityscape backdrop, it was really poor. I found myself looking for other flaws in the production, which kinda detracted from the magic for me.....The matting and blue screening is a huge improvement over the first series of films though.....Even the digitally enhanced 'collectors editions'.CyaDGR# 37Remember how lucky you are to see and touch the sky; the blind may only dream.
