ridetofly 0 #1 June 17, 2002 Hey all I just finished my PFF program here in Canada, which was sweeeeetttt! I've been talking with people from around the DZ about what I should start with (in regards to gear) some say JumpSuit others say coveralls and focus on other gear. Any suggestions? A rig is out of the question for a couple of months at least.
freeflir29 0 #2 June 17, 2002 I think I went....Goggles, altimeter, helmet, rig, new reserve, downsized main, got camera, finally bought jumpsuit. That all took two years. Getting the basics like altimeter, helmet, and rig have to be the first priority. "Here I come to save the BOOBIES!"
skymama 37 #3 June 17, 2002 my purchases, in order, were:goggles, helmet, altimeter, RW jumpsuit, rig, another rig, Dytter, and a FF jumpsuit. Now I want a different helmet, prescription goggles, and I'm sure I'm not done rig shopping. The list never ends! AndreaI'm high as a kiteI just mightStop and check you out. SkymonkeyONE 4 #4 June 17, 2002 I used to always preach that the smartest first purchase was a good jumpsuit. The reason for that was so that you wouldn't be fighting with your fallrate everytime you jumped a borrowed or rented suit; it really does make a difference. At this stage in your career, you need to be concentrating on learning new skills, not new equipment every weekend. Nowadays, though, I recommend buying a good , three-tone audible altimeter as a first purchase. That will save your ass if and when you ever get into any freefall trouble. They "wake you up" so to speak.ChuckMy webpage HERE
PhreeZone 20 #5 June 17, 2002 Go with the greenie here, I've seen way more then one person go low since they lost awareness. Then the Alti, jumpsuit goggles and helmet. Follow that by a rig after demoing all your gear for a few jumps to find what you want, then the other stuff...Drop the tube...DROP the tube...
freeflir29 0 #6 June 17, 2002 Oh yeah...I'm not sure where in the mix it was but before I bought my first rig I got a Time Out for $30 from Skykat. After "accidentally" burning it to 2400Ft once. Kinda scared me at 20 or 30 jumps. Very good investment!!!"Here I come to save the BOOBIES!"

MarkM 0 #8 June 17, 2002 My gear purchase order was: goggles, alti, used rig, jumpsuit, helmet, another helmet, new container, new reserve. Haven't bought an audible yet and probably won't for awhile. Still need to get a Cypres, though that'll wait until I start jumping again.Goggles, alti and a simple jumpsuit are probably a good start. pop 0 #9 June 17, 2002 I got it all at once and put it on my credit card. Figured it is much easier to make one payment a month, and have it all.----------"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he doesn't exist!"
Derekbox 0 #10 June 17, 2002 Quote I used to always preach that the smartest first purchase was a good jumpsuitSee I do need a suit. Hehehe (I would like a dytter too, but I doubt anyone is going to give me one). But I plan on buying one ASAP.;)I had a protec helmet so I am using that, I bought some goggles before my first jump (had to look cool). I am looking for a suit, alti and dytter. When I get the $$$ i am buying a rig. Just curious Chuck - do you recommend setting your audible to go off at break off, pull time or shortly after pull time so it would just be a wake up that you should have pulled?Blue Skies,D
SkymonkeyONE 4 #12 June 17, 2002 Donna,I tell young jumpers to set their three-tone audibles to:-breakoff-pull-hard deck for chopping a mal and dumping a reserveIf they are broke and can only afford an old one-tone audible, I tell them to set it for breakoff, just to wake them up and get them in the "track and pull" state of mind.ChuckMy webpage HERE
Donna 0 #13 June 17, 2002 Thanks, Chuck. I've heard a few people at my DZ say that you should set the first tone to go off right after you should have pulled so that you don't end up getting conditioned to breaking off or pulling at a tone and end up in trouble some day when it doesn't go off. That seems to make some sense to me. I got a protrack at the end of last year and only got to use it a few times before my knee surgery and never heard it in freefall with my protec anyway but I'm about to start jumping again now (with a bonehead mindwarp now so hopefully will be able to hear it) and was just wondering what to set it at. I do like the idea of the first tone at breakoff but thought of setting it for when I should already be tracking away. I just wanted to know if anyone else does it this way and how they like it or do most just set it the other way.Blue Skies,D
pilotdave 0 #14 June 17, 2002 I got really tired of wearing hot pink rental jumpsuits, so that was the first thing I bought (also right after I got a 25% off coupon for a bev suit, which helped). Then I soon got a helmet (protec), goggles (kroops), and altimeter (alti 3). The rig came a bit later. Then came a new helmet. Soon I'm gonna want a new canopy. Hmm this buying thing never ends, does it? I'd suggest waiting as long as you can stand it for the rig, as long as you can rent decent equipment. The altimeter is a good start since its pretty universal. Don't need a different one for RW or freeflying. An audible would be nice, but you can jump without one and you probably wont have an easy spot to mount it if you're still using a rented helmet. If you're stuck jumping something like a manta, you might want to consider getting a rig sooner. I'd also suggest getting an RW suit. I think it can really help RW skills (not that I have any). drenaline 0 #16 June 17, 2002 Here is how I did it: goggles; container with reserve; main, altimeter, AAD; jumpsuit; weight belt, packing mat, slinks. Need to buy my helmet now. Had an old SCUBA gear bag that I use for my rig."Life is full of danger, so why be afraid?"drenaline
