SkydiveMonkey 0 #1 June 18, 2002 I've moved my (then working) PC back home, now when I hit the power button, the fans spin up for about 1/2 second, then it all dies. I have to switch the PSU off for about 5 - 10 seconds the on again before it will do anything at all after that. I've tried making sure everything is plugged in tight, and everything looks fine. Any ideas? Adrenaline Junkie Skydive Monkey
lummy 4 #2 June 18, 2002 Bad PS wouild be my guess... You opened it up and made sure everything is seated properly? Cards, memory, cables? the INTERNET comes in any color you'd like
SkydiveMonkey 0 #3 June 18, 2002 Yup. Even tried unplugging hdd's/ fans etc to make sure the psu wasn't being overloaded. Adrenaline Junkie Skydive Monkey
Kris 0 #4 June 18, 2002 Open the case and reseat every card, every stick of RAM, the CPU, and every cable. If that fails then pull all the cards except for the video card and try again. After that fails, haul yourself to the local PC store and shell out some $ for a new PSU.Kris
skip 0 #5 June 18, 2002 I've had this verry problem here at my job before and all I did to remedy the situation was put the fan on a diffrent power buss. Basically just pulled the plug and inserted a diffrent one. .:skip
billo 0 #6 June 18, 2002 this is going to sound dumb, but you'd be amazed at how often it works for me at home and at work. *hit it* then *hit it* again!i swear, this is how i fix tv's, my car, my computer, and co-worker's computers. i've dealt with a few pesky power supplies...if it is an ATX motherboard (the motherboard controlling the PSU) then there is a definate possibility that it is a problem on the board, or maybe re-seating all of the cards would fix it.if it is an AT motherboard (older style, but my personal favorite, the power supply turns on and stays on when the power button is pressed) and you are having this problem, then it is DEFINATELY a problem with the PSU or your wire to the wall. i like dealing with AT power supplies more because they are so much easier to troubleshoot.good luck!b
Kris 0 #7 June 18, 2002 Quote*hit it* then *hit it* again!Umm, with some of the newer (i.e. higher capacity, smaller heads) disc drives I really wouldn't recommend this. One good head-slap (when the GMR head hits the platter) from a knock against the case and your disc drive will be a door-stop.Quotei like dealing with AT power supplies more because they are so much easier to troubleshoot.Tell me about it. At least with the older AT PSU's you had a bit more room to work with and it was possible to work on them. But at least with the glut of ATX systems, if it was an ATX PSU they're pretty in-expensive to replace unless it's a big one. I have a 430w in mine and that bad boy is $100. wildblue 7 #8 June 18, 2002 If the above suggestions don't work, try this:Pull all the cards out (video, modem, network, firewire, sound, etc) and turn on the PC. Does it give you a series of beeps now? If no, skip the rest, your power supply or main board is crap. If yes, put your video card back in, turn it on. Start putting all the cards back in one at a time (please remember to turn the computer off before installing each one ) until it shuts off on you again. Had the same thing happen to me, turned out my firewire card was causing it.(Yes, I realize I just pretty much repeated Kris)Warning: sunshine is a kleptomaniac
SkydiveMonkey 0 #9 June 18, 2002 Only thing I haven't tried is pulling out all the cards. Can't be bothered with it yet !! It is a 300 watt ATX PSU (only 4 months old dammit). I had to beef it up as when I installed my 1GHz athlon, my old 230 watt couldn't keep up )especially with it being "enhanced" to 1150 Adrenaline Junkie Skydive Monkey

cameramonkey 0 #11 June 19, 2002 From one monkey to another, its your power supply (as previously suspected). I see this all the time. $25 bucks gets you a new one (provided you didnt buy a mass produced Piece of sh... like a compaq/dell/hp. then expect to pay in excess of $75.
