The bastards!!!

British employment laws suck. >:(
On Tuesday, my SO who works for the same company as me was dismissed from her job! >:(>:(
Why? No reason at all, that's why.>:(>:(>:(
She'd been doing the job for nearly six months, having worked there previously in another job before a six week break, was well liked by everybody and was a hard worker. However, due to the complicated circumstances in which she obtained the job (nothing underhand by her I might add), she has now been fired.>:(>:(>:(>:(
The cruellest thing is that she knew her job was to be advertised and even helped write her own job description for the advert because she was assured by our manager and the Personnel Officer that her job was safe and that these were all just "formalities".>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(
She was even interviewed for the job!>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(
They knew only too fucking well that they had someone else lined up for the position but they lied through their teeth the lying, scheming, two-faced bastards!!>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(
Now my girlfriend has been forced out of a job she loved, through no fault of her own with a mortgage and three kids to support.>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(
British employment laws suck because companies over here can legally fire someone within twelve months of their hiring for any reason and with very little right of redress.>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(
Don't you just love this country?>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(
Oh yeah, and the weather stinks, too!!>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(
Hope you don't mind me venting my spleen here but if I don' I am likely to do something I will regret and get the sack myself.>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(

Dude, that sucks. But over here, depending on the state you can be fired any time for any reason without any recourse. California is a "right to work" state, so they need a reason to fire you. But Pennsylvania is a "work at will" state. Your employer can kick you out after 20 years if they want, for any reason. Only if you can prove you were fired for being a "protected class" (e.g. minority, female, elderly) can you even attempt to do anything about it.

here in FL where i work (health care) you can be let go w/out any warning or reason in the first 90 days of employment (deemed probationary). after that they have to give you at least 2 weeks notice of termination and there has to be reasoning for it.

Maryland too. I'm certainly not implying relevence to the sad news that started this thread, but the laws here do tend to keep private industry more productive. Most of our real slackers are tenured educators or civil servants. :)Justin

Wow thats bad news, similar thing happened to a friend of mine, she was "asked to leave" the company as she hadn't met her targets, but this was 4 weeks befeore her targets were due. She knew there wasn't any point fighting it.
Personnally I'm hoping to get made redundant in the next couple of weeks, money for a rig and time to jump for a while.

Thanks for all the comments, guys.
It may not be all bad news after all.
She will know today if she is to be offered an alternative position within the company (a condition in the paperwork they had forgotten about) but if not she has been offered a job elsewhere which sounds much better. So every cloud DOES have a silver lining.
Incidentally, as if it seemed things couldn't get any worse, she did her first ever jump yesterday. A tandem at Langar with the excellent DM. Unfortunately, they had a line-over and had to chop!! :o
So, two firsts in one day...BEEEEEEER!!!

I hope you got something IN WRITING. I have been through 7 rounds of layoffs in the last five years. That does not include people who were fired outright. I think the right to work statute applies to working for competitors or other related parties. Good luck with those blinders!

No blinders here, I live in PA. What the "right to work" statute means is that you can't be fired and replaced in the same position by someone else unless they can show cause for having fired you (e.g. poor productivity, excessive lateness or absenteeism, etc.). Layoffs and downsizing, however, are a different matter. Employers can't be expected to keep employing people they can no longer afford when the economy takes a downturn.
In PA they can toss you because they don't like the color of your tie and replace you with someone who has better taste in neck attire.

Cali is the same - in theory. I will admit that this is an extremely liberal state and litigation is the national passtime. Although "at will" employment is the rule, it can be challenged and often is. Not always successfully, though (personal experience). Best thing to do is have it in writing.
