nws01 0 #1 June 30, 2002 I had my second reserve ride today. I have not been jumping for the last couple of weeks because of the weather and work so I was full of excitement and off to the dz this morning. I arrived and began talking to a fellow that sounded familiar. It ended up being Dz.commer JNCoughlin. We talked about this wonderful website and his progression through AFF and the fact that he was completing his AFF level 6 today and we discussed his flip and what it would be like. When then discussed the first cutaway I had and what happened. I told him that the training he was having will prepare him for the procedures and he will know when he needs to complete them. I then manifested myself on the next load and Robbie the DZO of Skydive Boston Providence and I completed a 2 way RW. He is an awesome skydiver and has competed successfully in a lot of RW competitions. Second load I did a solo freefly and completed a sit to a head down and was psyched for the next jump. Another DZ.commer Emmie showed up and we talked and then we manifested for a 2 way. We went through our dive flow on the ground and we were going to work on exiting stable for the base in formations. We geared up and we were on the plane. Exit was nice and stable and we locked arms and had a stable two way. Then we had some fun and locked arms and spun around for awhile. Seperation time came and we both tracked after 180 degree turns. At this dz there is really no outs so they have a rule that you must be under canopy at 3k. I am use to a snivel so at 3.5k I deployed my Spectre but I had something different today. As soon as I deployed the pilot chute it opened immediately with severe twists and I was spinning through the sky out of control . I tried to stop the spinning and kick out the twists but had no control whatsoever. I chopped while my body was on my back under canopy and I immediately arched and got back to the belly position before deploying my reserve. I had my second reserve ride today and I have yet to determine what happened. All I can say is practice your emergency procedures before, during the plane ride, and use them if you have something like I had today. As far as the reason for the malfunction I have no idea. It opened immediately from deployment which is unusual and there was twists from the risers to the canopy and it was spinning VERY rapidly! What do you think caused it? nws01 0 #5 June 30, 2002 There is a trend there. Maybe it wasn't body position Clay!
Michele 1 #6 June 30, 2002 Well, since you have an alter ego here, have NWS01 on the cutaway, and then Chromeboy on the reserve. That way, when you feel like changing personalities and/or parachutes, all you have to do is read it and do it! Phew - glad you came out alright. Damn!!! Quick question - where was the slider? Ever see it? Ciels and Pinks- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
Kris 0 #7 June 30, 2002 Welcome to the "Two Reserve Rides" club. I feel your pain, trust me. As for the handles, I have "Eject" on my cutaway handle. I am probably going to change them to "Please Go" on the cutaway handle and "Please Work" on the reserve handle when I send in my Mirage for some small work this winter. Spy38W 0 #8 June 30, 2002 Damn Nathan, good job on your second reserve ride. Were you trying to catch up to my two or something? If so, you're still behind the curve, I had my third today. This time I chose a spinning mal under line twists under an elliptical 135.. I followed the freebag and main this time and landed about 100 feet from them. I landed in some field surrounded by barbed wire so had to wait for people to bring a ladder. Then when I got on the other side began the search for the freebag/main. Freebag was easy to find, but couldn't find the main. As we were searching a security guard came out and noted how he had heard something hit the roof. Argh, so I found a ladder going to the roof, but it wasnt connected to the building where the main landed. Walked around and found that the building where it did land didn't have a ladder. So anyway, fast forward about five minutes and a police car shows up, speeding to the back of the place where I was (in front) then 5 more, then an ambulance, and a firetruck. After a couple of minutes I saw one of the police officers running across the rooftop like a madman. I figured it was because the security guard mentioned that we wouldn't be able to have access to the roof until Monday, and the DZO saying that because of the sunilight the canopy would be destroyed by then... so anyway, the officer gets to the building that the main was on after jumping across 3 buildings and looks over the edge and shouts "I can't find anybody up here".. uhm, duh, I'm down here, could you toss me the parachute.. About this time the paramedics arrive at the front and ask where the victim is. Me, , Uhm, I'm the victiim, but I'm not a victim. So he asks if I have any injuries, cuts or bruises or anything, I say no and then his buddies come up and start handing him $5 bills. WTF, they were betting on the severity of my injuries... Later I was told that the report they got was that somebody had a parachute malfunction and landed in the roof of the place. So we got the main loaded up and headed back to the DZ. Proceed to turn on the beer light. into the sixth beer somebody walked up behind me to administer the pie for my 100th jump, then another, and another. Apparently they had been delaying the event while debating whether or not I should get pied for my 100th because of the reserve ride. Ahh, what a bittersweet day... Michele 1 #10 June 30, 2002 Quote Oh yeah, the cutaway handles, how about ChromeBoy for the cutaway, and NWS01 for the reserve? Hmmm....sounds kinda familiar.....backwards, but familiar.... Glad to hear about your cutaway and walkaway. Man, between all of you and Clay, I am glad I'm grounded for a while. Well, not really, but may as well find the silver lining to this cloud....!! skydiverbrian 0 #12 June 30, 2002 I don't get it. What's up with the 'most cutaways' contest? a: "I have the most" b: "Do not!" a: "Do too!" b: "Do not!" a: "Do too!" Personally, I'm happy to say my cutaway total is zero . I've even kicked out of spinning line twists on my stiletto to avoid it. Another reason not to hum it in -- clear the mal and it won't cost you a day hunting in the corn or a repack. In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal
nws01 0 #13 June 30, 2002 QuoteQuick question - where was the slider? Ever see it? The slider was a little higher that half way up to the canopy. It was a pretty ugly sight. And that opening hurt like hell. I am sore as can be this morning but at least I am ok! Pete, I am glad you are ok. I can see all of that taking place in Immokalee in my head. Pretty funny. You keep trying to one up me don't you?

He made a joke about it last year saying somthing about earning his "C" for reserve rides after a hard pull on a pullout someone packed for him...although he has done alot of test jumping for the military. Sebazz1 2 #20 July 1, 2002 Hey Nathan glad you handeled the mal with no problems. Did you jump again that day? The first jump after a mal can be a little unsetteling
nws01 0 #21 July 1, 2002 I was going to jump yesterday. I got to the dz and inspected the main, cleaned and scotchguarded my container and then the clouds rolled in. They grounded the plane. I will jump maybe this weekend if I can slip away from the hotel. There is some Hockey tournaments in the area this weekend so it will be busy here. Happy Belated B-day Sebazz!
