quade 4 #1 July 2, 2002 Ok, I was watching the bomber fly-by .mpg again and something caught my eye. I know it's mentioned in the article but I guess I missed the discussion on this forum -- check out the attached. That's white thing with the stripes on it -- that's the top of a wing. Really amazing video. I hope he sells it for a good chunk of change.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

airann 1 #3 July 2, 2002 Is that what that was?? I thought it must be a glitch with the frames on the video. It IS hard to belive, isnt it? ~AirAnn~
skycat 0 #4 July 2, 2002 Just a little trivia on the plane, it's a WWII bomber one of only 4 still flying it's a PB4Y-2, basically a B-24 made for the navy with a different tail. I'm 99% sure the 2nd to the last picture on this page is the one that had the near miss. It's the one that is always flying over my house anyway. Fly it like you stole it! indyz 1 #5 July 2, 2002 QuoteThat's white thing with the stripes on it -- that's the top of a wing. Crap. I thought that it was the tail. Now for the only question I have left: Is that plane flying from left-to-right or right-to-left in the frame?
cloudseeker2001 0 #6 July 2, 2002 WOW skycat, you really know your bombers! "Some call it heavenly in it's brilliance, others mean and rueful of the western dream"

Shark 0 #8 July 2, 2002 I was watching the video of our last jump on Saturday and caught a glimpse of a plane a few hundred yards away. I'll see if I can upload the video...
skycat 0 #9 July 2, 2002 Naaaa....I'm just really good at google searches Since there are only 2 kinds of slurry bombers that fly over my apt it was easy to figure out which one that one was.Fly it like you stole it!
Slappie 9 #10 July 2, 2002 So this incident was in Co? Is this close to the DZ you jump at all the time now Kel? If so! BE CAREFUL!! WFFC 1 #11 July 2, 2002 There's 2 airports in the Denver metro area that the slurry bombers have been based. On the North end, they're based at Jeffco and, since the incident, they have not even been near the DZ at all. Michael----- ~~~Michael
skycat 0 #12 July 2, 2002 Yep that was at my "home" DZ, the airport they fly out of is between my apt and my office. I'm still waiting for one of them to take a chunk of roof off my place they fly so damn low. Fly it like you stole it!
wingnut 0 #13 July 2, 2002 hey sorry i missed this... i talked to the guy that that happened to....actually bought him breakfast then next morning........ seein the video was amazing.... i met him friday night at the high plains boogie at calhan, co ..... i guess he sorta got yelled at for not looking before he jumped...but what the hell..how fast is one of those planes going???? jst crazy....... ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"
quade 4 #14 July 3, 2002 Interesting you should bring that up. Let's say it was going at 120 knots. Where would you have looked for it? What if it was going 180 knots? What if it was even a little bit hazy? You know the days that actually are completely legal VMC yet if you looked at the ground just a mile or so away from the DZ you wouldn't see it. Billvon and I are in a mild discussion about this very topic. He says it's always possible to spot this sort of aircraft collision in advance. I maintain that it's next to impossible to visually guarantee the area is actually clear.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Scratch 0 #17 July 3, 2002 I would say that if both aircraft are travelling in the same general direction it is possible to spot the lower one quite easily....assuming it is clear. If they are each going the other way....good luck. I would say it would be next to impossible for the person spotting. The jump pilot would have the best chance and if he misses it...........ouch. IMHO.
