Newbie first post - weight and size?

Recommended Posts

Heya-

I'm new here, so I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I figure if it's not, the mods will move it anyway :D I've wanted to go skydiving for a long time now, and now that I'm finally old enough to afford it on my own(a dinosaur-like 20 years of age, yeehaw!), I've had friends mention weight restrictions and/or size restrictions. I'm about 6'3", 225-235lbs depending on season, and of very athetic build. Will this present any problems, perhaps needing a specially equipped DZ, or should most any DZ be able to handle someone of my size?

so.....are you single? You're too young for me, I'm asking for the other girls!;)

Actually, I think a VERY experienced and well-known jumper here in Deland named Vladi Pesa is about your size, or even a little bigger, so it can be done. Of course, he jumps a canopy about the size of a handkerchief now.

Thanks for the help, folks, when I call them tomorrow, hopefully I'll get some good news :D :D

I jumped with a student twice this past weekend hwo weighed 250lbs fully geared. No problem at all. I just had to jump naked to keep up with him;)<---j/k

I can't imagine how cold -that- would be on the bits.... :o ;)

I'm pretty excited. looks like the DZ I wanna go to is $180 for the course and first static jump, then $40/jump for statics. Once I get the course and 4 additional jumps, I can move to freefalls at $25/jump. Does that sound reasonable?

I was kidding about being naked:D

Suuuure ya were :D yeah, I was just trying to imagine tho, gosh. 120mph winds..... :S

Yes we have a 300 sq ft canopy that he jumped. Most DZ's should have no problem accomodating you. Good Luck!!

And it is not "Fall from the sky" but "Fly in the skyB|"

Yeah, worse case scenario, I can head to one of the bigger DZs, just a longer trip.

vladi is 6'3"? Huh, I dindt' think he was taller than me.

to the original poster -- sounds like you're doing static line, have you looked into all the different training options? just curious, the more informed you are the better!

I haven't really looked into the other stuff, I was under the (probably mistaken) impression that tandem was really just if you wanna go once or twice, whereas static line is going to be the quickest route to actually getting a licence. AFF isn't available at my quasi-local DZ, as far as I know, but I'll ask 'em when I call tomorrow.

welcome to the sport! don't sweat your size, it is good to see another big guy around! we fall fast, and i love falling with fast (we're *fast-ies* not *fatties*) people, it requires a lot less effort on staying big and more time spent having fun!

i did my first tandem when i was 6'5" and 255 pounds. my instructor was cool with giving me a tandem, but wanted me at 220 pounds for aff. so i dropped the weight.

now that i've graduated, bought my 210 sqft canopy, and moved away from my home home dz, i can put the weight back on...it's a cheaper way to get high speed landings out of my canopy (much cheaper than downsizing:)

anyhow, worry less about your weight and concentrate on having fun and your next jump. enjoy!

Even though I'm young at heart, it would just be a little too weird to be 17 years older than my date.

Oh Skymama.can I justify it for you? LOL
All the better magazines say that you CAN date a younger man........take your age divide it by 2 and add 7.........ummmmmm me thinks 20 just squeeks by;) Course I'm older than you so I can't date anyone younger than say.......27......
You go girl! Bwahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Tandem is the best way to experience skydiving if you don't want really want to learn to be a skydiver. A lot of dropzones are starting to use tandeming as a part of regular training though, AFP or IAF programs.

The prices you listed were about right. The only thing I'd recommend is to bring a couple sandwiches to the dropzone because you'll be there most of the day.

Huh? I went tandem since it was offered and I *think* I'm a skydiver... If I'm not someone let me know....

What I meant was, that if you don't think that you want to be a skydiver, you just want to experience skydiving once in your life, then tandeming is the way to go.

If you're already pretty sure you want to learn to skydive and your DZ is only offering SL and tandeming, then there's not much point in doing a tandem.

Heck, my 18th jump was a tandem and I think I may be a skydiver too.

What's the best way if you DO want to learn to be a skydiver?

Ask 20 different people and you'll get 20 different opinions.
