Out of Date Gear Question

I should probably know this, but I don't.

My gear is going out of date tomorrow (July 3rd) - Can I jump it tomorrow or is it considered out of date at midnight tonight? Or does it just depend what DZ you're jumping at?

Rhonda, this reserve is your last resort. I had a cutaway this weekend right after a reserve repack and I am glad I had it. It is out of date. Do not jump until it is repacked. There IS only one way to find out it is OK. I know you do not want to find out when you use it.

Since nobody has gotten around to answering the question, lemme ask: Is the date on the reserve card the last day that it can be jumped, or the first day that it can't be jumped?

Last time that happened to me, the day the computer said I'd be out of date was the last day to jump. Or was it the day before? Why are you waiting until the lasat possible day? By the way, it doesn't stop working after that date. Quite frankly, I think the number of days needs to be lengthened from everything riggers tell me. Hell, it's based on the old silk parachutes! Times have changed, but not the rules. Oh well.

Disclaimer---- If you try to pull the silver handle the day after it's out of date, and it blows up, disregaurd everything I just posted. Have a nice day.

Talk to manifest. Most reasonable people will allow a one-day grace period. Since this is a long holiday weekend, you'll probably be SOL. Just bring it in Thursday morning and give your rigger an extra $20 for same-day service.

Are you serious? So if my reserve is 3 hours past the repack cycle, it probably won't open?! Holy crykies! I'm so glad I didn't have a mal when I jumped a rig that was an entire week out of date!!! :o :o

Maybe not dangerous, but it is a federal offense, right? Wonder if anyone's ever been arrested for jumping an out of date rig... That would be pretty funny.

Its the pilot of the plane that will suffer if you jump an out of date rig. It counts as a violation on thier record and can keep them from getting an airline slot if thats what they want.

Yet another reason it's good that we're a self-regulating sport. There's alread too many Feds trying to make other decisions for us. I understand the pilot's license is "on the line", but it's that way for everything else, too. Seatbelts, loading, other planes in the air, etc. They try to put everything on the pilot. Not fair at all. If you choose to jump an out of date reserve, that's on you. Personally, I am always current or I don't jump. But I won't tell someone else they have to do the same.

Well, the pilot would probably get in the most trouble cause he has the most to lose (cant really take a skydiver's license away for breaking the rules, or anything like that), but jumpers are just as responsible for following the FARs. Do jumpers (not pilots or DZs) ever get in trouble for FAR violations?

Um, no it's not. It's on the pilot of the aircraft you jumped out of. Period.

Seeing how we kinda need pilots to enjoy our sport.... don't jump an out of date reserve. While the likelihood of anything happening is slim, why take that chance with someone else's career?

Don't flame me here guys.......but the big picture is that ultimately it could cost the pilot a slot with an airline. These pilots are basically paying their dues diver driving us (with very little thanks). I agree that we could use a change in our current repack cycle and this has been discussed in the forum on numerous occassions, however......the rules have not been changed, and out of respect for our pilots, and our rules........get your repacks on time. You don't have to agree with the rules, but best to keep in mind that it isn't always about YOU!

Well since this thread went in this direction - I thought I'd clarify - I have never actually jumped a reserve that was a week out of date, I was just trying to be a smartass because someone implied that it was dangerous to do so.
I agree completely that we should not screw our pilots (unless they're good looking)

Ok, since we don't want to get the pilots in trouble we've all pretty much agreed that we wouldn't jump gear that's out of date - but when the heck does it go out of date? It helps if we have a clear answer as to when exactly that is....

Look in the saftey page at the top of the Page here. It has a repack calculator on it. If the days left are 0 then you can still jump it for that day, if it says you are over.... question answered.
