JDBoston 0 #51 July 10, 2002 My fiction favorites: anything by Milan Kundera, or James Joyce or Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Lolita too, occasionally Thomas Pynchon. I think our present society is actually more like Brave New World than 1984. In Brave New World, humans try to control and plan and engineer everything in life, and everyone takes this drug "soma" (like video games, TV, or online message boards...) to keep from having to really think or engage with each other - like rats in a cage, they get through their days by self-stimulating and self-medicating and become inert and ineffective as citizens. But I do see the 1984 parallels starting to emerge... Orwell was a very sharp guy. I like most of the rest of the books he wrote too. Joe

Scoby 0 #53 July 10, 2002 QuoteEnder's Game was practically the bible of adolescent boys when I was in high school. It's every boys wargame dream come alive. Almost everyone I know has read it, loved it, still has a copy, and read Ender's Shadow in hardback the day it came out. Same here, most of my friends have read it, at least the sci-fi geeks anyway. Orson Scott Card is pretty good all around, but Ender's Game is a masterwork.
FallRate 0 #54 July 10, 2002 Actually, the original Time Machine was written by H.G. Wells. Maybe H.G. Wells did have a time machine and he and George Orwell are the same person. Or...perhaps they are the same person but neither is the real person. This person could be from the 25th century, stopping every now and then in times past to predict the future in writing. His real name is probably Harry George Orwells, or something like that. FallRate "Do you believe the FBI is doing enough to prevent the July 18 Terrorist Attacks!? nws01 0 #55 July 10, 2002 This is strange but it is about an author. I had a dream last night that Dove was coming to Boston and needed a place to stay. I got all excited and had her stay at my place. For some reason I put up a tent in my house for her to sleep in. I asked her if she wanted to go out to get something to eat and she told me she had a date with J.D. Salinger. He came to the house and picked her up. I was jealous but I was happy thatI met J.D. I am messed in the head I know.
