I need advice on getting a dog.

Recommended Posts

My family has had many Jack Russel terriers. They are by far the smartest dogs I have ever seen. They have loads of personality and only chew things for the first 4-6 months. Not 2 years like labs.....:D As an example....I had one when I was about 17 that got REALLY pissed at me. This dog loved to ride on anything that moved. Motorcycles, cars, tractors, airplanes. Didn't matter to him as long as it moved!! Well, I had to take one of the other dogs to the vet one day and didn't want to leave this one in the car for hours. So, I made him get out and told him he had to stay. That dog wouldn't come near me for the next 3 days. He wouldn't even take anything I tried to feed him and this dog LOVED to eat!! Finally I figured out why he was mad and made him sit on my lap while I apologized. After that I guess he forgave me........B| He was quite a character. Plus, they are small dogs...a big one might go 20-25Lbs and don't shed too much. Very smart and easy to house train.

That's what Eddie from Fraser is, right?

Yep...thats him!! The only bad thing about them is that they LOVE to hunt. My parents have lost several in the past ten years to them running off in the woods and getting themselves killed by one thing or another (Coyotes mostly). The plus side of this is that they do eat rats. In fact...most of them love to eat rats. They will out do a cat any day!!!

It's not typically that the puppies get bad treatment at the pet store, but if one gets sick, they all get sick. Also, you don't know where they came from and the parent's history. They are usually kept in cages and no training is initiated. The wire grates they stand on in the cages are often damaging to their hips as well, especially for larger dogs although I saw a pet store pug develop hip dysplasia once too. My pugs came from one of the stores I worked at and they're in great health, but I would still recommend you stay away from it if you can.

I remember once when I had to pick a bunch of pups up at the airport and there was like 3 or 4 stuffed in each crate and they were completely covered in poop with no food left and the water dishes all spilled - it was too sad.

Checking out shelters and the different breed rescue organizations is a good idea too...
