AiRpollUtiOn 0 #1 July 15, 2002 to construct a catapult that would shoot us up to ... say 15000 ft??? Would be great though, what about doing some freeflying on the way up, and go for a 4 way RW on the way down... In a perfect world..."Don't make me come down there" - God. thrillseek 0 #3 July 15, 2002 that device has already been made...it's called "Old Faithful and 1/2 a sheet of plywood"!!!
Jayboz 0 #4 July 15, 2002 Interesting. A 200lb person being shot up 15000 ft would require 3,000,000 ft*lbs of energy Say you were to compress a spring 50 feet for the catapult, it would have a spring constant of 2400 lbs/ft. (1/2 KX^2) A spring compressed 50 foot with this spring constant will put 120,000 lbs of foce on a person (F=KX) A 200 lb person with this amount of force exerted on them for 50 feet will accelerate at a rate of 19320 ft/sec^2 (F=MA) or about 600 G’s give or take. Though I shot this estimate from the hip, I'd have to say No. By the way, I don't wonder why I can't get chicks
billvon 3,080 #5 July 16, 2002 Best you can get is about 1500 feet. I ran the numbers a while back. The limiting issue is the speed you can survive coming out of the launcher.

FallRate 0 #7 July 16, 2002 Dude, you beat me to it. Admittedly, I would've had to have cracked my physics text. But the force of the initial acceleration would not be the only physiological limiting factor. A much greater force than would normally be accounted for in the "academic exercise" of launching a body to 15,000 feet would be required to overcome the induced (?) drag. So I'm guessing if you could survive the G's, you wouldn't survive the incinerating resultant heat. FallRate
jtval 0 #8 July 16, 2002 I think you could get someone high enough to get a short ride but they would end up looking like chewed bubbled gum by the time the reach the top floor. so It wouldnt be a great idea..... youd be alot better off if you just found a flat edge of a high mountian, or lived in a big city. there are lots of free lifts in the city. even if you get arrested for "attempted suicide" or "causing havok" it would still be cheaper then building the catapult that would smear you across the sky.My photos My Videos
