scottbre 0 #1 July 16, 2002 Well, this weekend, I and 2 other people had a tracking contest. One was another low-time jumper like me and the other was a guy who has a birdman suit that he jumps every so often (not on this jump though). Anyway, toward the end of the jump it looked like I had gone farther than he had, but I couldn't really tell because we weren't flying parallel. Anyway on that jump I had an average fall rate of 93 mph (gotta love that Pro-Track). Later on I lent him my protrack to see how slow he could get (vertically) in his Birdman suit. When he came down it said that his average fallrate was 91 mph. I went almost as slow just tracking (with a jumpsuit) as he did with his birdman suit on. "Your mother's full of stupidjuice!" PhreeZone 20 #3 July 16, 2002 91 in a birdman suit? Damn he must have tried to go with no wings.... I saw a newbie get to 60 on his second jump out of a 182... it don't take much to slow down i none of those I guess. Sounds like the jumper in the suit has bad body position.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
quade 4 #4 July 16, 2002 Ok, I'm not a Bird-man (I've only done one Bird-man jump and I sucked pretty bad at it), but I'm guessing that the ability to fall slow, while a small indication of tracking ability, isn't exactly the same thing as the results of actually going forward. Fer instance, I can fall pretty damn slow in my camera suit falling straight down (mid 90s), but I have a feeling that a freefly tracking dive at those vertical speeds covers a lot more distance horizontally. So, vertical speed ain't really what it's all about.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

scottbre 0 #8 July 16, 2002 QuoteSo, vertical speed ain't really what it's all about. Well, I know I was tracking when I hit 93mph. I have no idea what he was doing at 91mph, but those birdman suits leave little other options than to track. Maybe it was just a bad jump for him. Hehe... "Your mother's full of stupidjuice!" konradptr 0 #9 July 16, 2002 I can't imagine that any birdman was falling at 91. It might also be possible that the pro-track wasn't set on the slow mode, which will turn off the pro-track in the middle of a BM jump. Maybe it only recorded the first couple seconds... On my first BM jump in the thin air of Denver, I had an average below 60... ------------------------------------------ Getting banned isn't that bad...... LawnDart21 0 #11 July 16, 2002 Was the protrack set at SAS (Skydiver's Airspeed) or TAS (True Airspeed)? Might that make a difference? -- My other ride is a RESERVE.

Yoshi 0 #13 July 16, 2002 well all I have to say is regardless of his bird jump way to go on getting your speed slowed down on your track. most think distance is the only thing important, but slow speed=less altitude=more distance._________________________________________ this space for rent. PhreeZone 20 #14 July 16, 2002 Wat are you using to tell the speeds? Unless you hook it up to a jumptrack.... there is no way the on screen display is accurate.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
LawnDart21 0 #15 July 16, 2002 I agree, as long as you can track far and straight, I'll jump a big way with you anytime! Congrats on your tracking. -- My other ride is a RESERVE.

Unless you hook it up to a jumptrack.... there is no way the on screen display is accurate. the on screen display is accurate, it just doesn't give enough info. as for accuracy, jumptrack can say 273.82 for max speed and on screen will tell you 274 - not a big deal. stan. -- it's not about defying gravity; it's how hard you can abuse it. speed skydiving it is ...
