Well, from my perspective, if I were mistakenly convicted of a crime, I'd much rather have the chance of release at some point rather than 6 feet of dirt over my head.
Yes, the cost is associated with the trial, not the execution. The reason for that is because of all the safeguards that must be taken to ensure that an innocent is not put to death by mistake. And even that doesn't work all the time. The effort of getting a death sentence passed is what doesn't make sense to me. And making it easier would just mean a higher likelihood of mistakes.
