DZ.com vs. Wreck Dot

Recommended Posts

almost.... but he forgot:

"I've got 112 jumps and think that I should downsize because my hook turns aren't good enough."

"Well I've got 114 jumps and I think the problem is that your chest strap is too tight"

"Would you both shut up? Neither of you should be doing hook turns, let alone loading your canopies at 1.8/1"

"Oh shut up, you just don't want anyone to have any fun. I praticed my landings up high, and my jumpmasters said I'd be fine"

Or...

>"Would you both shut up? Neither of you should be doing hook turns, let alone loading your canopies at 1.8/1"

"I'm going to ignore you Canopy Nazi since you think I'm progressing faster then you did at the same jumps and you are trying to hold me back."

"Well in my 10000 jumps I've learned that having a 78 jump student doing 360 hooks on a canopy loaded at 1.9:1 is a statistic waiting to happen"

"----

Enough of the negitivity! Please quit saying that people will hurt them selfs. I've got 200 jumps on canopies I load greater then 1.8 and I'll NEVER hurt my self... hear that? NEVER!!!!!!!"

"BOOBIES!!"

"He's right! So I only have 47 jumps. I landed that Sabre2 loaded at 1.6 just fine this weekend, even with all that wind. I'm buying a Cobalt that I'll load at 1.8 next week; the Cobalt flies bigger than other canopies y'know. I'll be just fine as long as I don't do anything stupid."

That guy on rec. pretty much summed up the majority of what I see here. There is definitely an inordinate amount of people overestimating their abilities. For everyone's sake, I hope it's just a lot of shit-talk they're doing online while they don't actually do what they talk about at their DZs.

I said this a while ago in the S&T forum:
"Just from some of the posts I've read here on DZ.com, we've got people with 50-200 jumps who are already swoopers, freefly coaches, videographers, extreme canopy pilots, and S&TAs. I am none of these things. I am, however, a jumper who has realized that all that "bullshit" that the older/more experienced jumpers were telling you in the beginning, has real value and is worth listening to."

All the 300 jump wonders should really be careful when they try to give advice to, and they should be even more careful when they evaluate their own abilities. If you think you're ahead of the game and an exception to all the rules, think again. Go talk to the old-timers and ask them people like yourself. Sometimes you're better off knowing who to listen to than trying to look like you know everything.
Oh, hello again!

so true wildblue. Try this find the oldest cranky fart on the dz. Sit down and talk to him. He prolly won't tell ya how to do a nice hook at 50 jumps but he will prolly help keep you butt out of trouble.

rec.dot has value as dz.com does. Just like at the dz you have to put on the bull chit filter and see who to listen to and who to avoid.

Trent,

Part of what you might perceive is due to the fact that lots of the low number jumpers here don't post a lot about certain things. In some ways, the vocal minority can be seen as the norm.

For example, although I blabber incessantly in the Talkback forum, when it comes to the Gear & Rigging and Safety & Training forums, I always accurately state my (lack of) experience, and am open to information and constructive criticism from more experienced folks. In those forums, I read and lurk a lot more, because I don't have a lot to add, and damned little authority to what I do say. So I mostly just shut up and read.

I've actually found much better information here than on Wreck Dot, because even the hint of moderation does play a big part in the feeling of the forums. Blantantly incorrect information will be authoritatively countered. The friendlier atmostphere is also more conducive to communications that actually teach something. There is a distinction between the banter (Talkback forum) and the serious (everything else). People are pretty good about putting their comments in the proper place. With a newsgroup, it can be very hard for a newbie to know who is experienced and who is just blowing smoke. It is easier here, which is important when the information you are looking for is safety-related.

You do have valid points though. I don't totally disagree. I'm just clarifying.

I post alot, well not a lot compared to Clay, but I post more then anyone else besides him...and half the time I'm wrong, thats good too, though, since when I am, I'm corrected and everyone learns.

Some things I can not and will not be corrected on, though, the important things, like which beer is better and boobies...

Dave:

you can't possibly know which beer is the best unless you have ancestors in germany! B| i don't drink, but every now and then (and from when i did) i found that the dark german beers are REALLY good! :P and if you ever do come even remotely close to catching clay's post numbers you should be assinged a much more articulated moniker than "mighty mouse" maybe........."Super Dave!" ;)

Hey! What did I say? No correcting when it comes to beer! Lone Star, hands down, in a can, not in the bottle! B|

There's only one Super Dave and he jumps at Spaceland...crazy fool, half of the really good stories from DZ around the Houston area start "So Super Dave was..." :D:D
