My first attempt at FF...

Recommended Posts

Well, I attempted sit flying for the first time this weekend. You guys make it look a lot easier than it really is. I spent most of the time on my back, side, upside down, and every other way. How many jumps does it usually take for somebody to get this down?

With that said, it was the funnest jump I have had yet and I didn't even come close to getting it right. Can't wait to try it again! :)

It is not as easy as it looks. I had the joyous opportunity to jump with Clay for my first sit fly attempt. He still makes fun of me for it.:D It took me about 10 jumps to get where I could hold it. I am still just doing two way sits until I become more proficient. I do not want to go out with to many others or FF newbies until I am 100% confident in my 360's, forward / backward / side to side movement. I had a coached sit fly jump this weekend and I did ok. Our average speed was 160 mph.

It never gets easier, thats the beauty of freeflying. As soon as you master one thing you'll be challenged by something else. I struggled a lot with forward movement in a sit, then I struggled to learn side-slipping, then docking was quite hard to learn. My head down is still shit but I'm having a blast and enjoying every jump no matter who I jump with! Just remember your levels (ie approach a formation on a level, don't dive down or pop up direct at them). A good tip I got taught that you can practice on your own is alti checks. This forces you to use your arms symmetrically, keeps you altitude aware, gets you in the habit of presenting a hand for a dock and is a good way to practice blocking too). Try and get someone to film you soon so you don't get into bad posture habits etc.

Enjoy it!

Just remember that it is important to walk before you run. It is important to be able to fly your body well on your belly in all directions before engaging in freeflying. RW really teaches all the fundamentals.
As to how many jumps, that all depends on you, your body awareness, a good coach/camera flyer.
Whatever you do don't get discouraged........it's all supposed to be about fun! (and safety too);)
Cheers

Definitely might want to get some coaching, even if for a few jumps. I thought I had a fairly stable, straight down sitfly. My first two way was with a coach, and boy was I glad. I realized that I was sliding around everywhere :S, and when we looked at the tape, I had a tendancy to lean back, which in turn, pushed me forward. Either way, keep practicing, and have fun.

That name fit ....that thing.....he was doing perfectly!!!

Actually you referred to it as a "roach being sprayed by Raid look," Clay! I didn't hear anything about an Egyptain. I like that better because the lead singer of the Bangles is a hottie and she has nice boobies!B|
