bananna 0 #1 July 23, 2002 I thought this might make for an ineresting post... How often do you look at your altimeter during a skydive? I look 3-4 times, and the checks are usually at the same altitudes.
AggieDave 6 #2 July 23, 2002 Usually twice, and a couple times setting up under canopy.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
nws01 0 #3 July 23, 2002 About the same as Dave. I want Bill Von to invent goggles that have some sort of a HUD so we can see our altitude and speed on the way down. This would sell well with freeflyers I am sure.
SkymonkeyONE 4 #4 July 23, 2002 It's according to what I am doing. If I am doing AFF, I check it about five times. Tandems, I usually check it twice. On both of those, I have my Pro Dytter set at the critical altitudes for the skydive. (6000 lock-on for AFF cat A, AFF wave-off/start pull sequence altitude, AFF minimum pull altitude.) On an RW jump I check it twice: once when my internal clock runs out, and once after my Dytter goes off and I am tracking away waiting to pull. freeflir29 0 #5 July 23, 2002 On two ways I tend to only look at it twice. They are busy skydives and I know about how many moves I can get in before time runs out. I have lots of video where I never look at it once until break off. I'll glance and it is always between 5000-4500 Ft. You see me look...and then take off. I'll go through geeking Andre and then barrel rolling. Then check it again right before I pull. If it's just a Free Fly dive with friends tend to check around 6K, 5K, and then pull time. On belly dives I never know what the hell is going on. I'll check at 9, 8, 6, 5800, 5000, 4500, 4000, 3500, and then pull time. My internal clock gets all goofed up with the extra time. skymedic 0 #8 July 23, 2002 My favorite types of jumps....I dont use an altimeter as they aren't that reliable that low..... Marc otherwise known as Mr.Fallinwoman....
jfields 0 #9 July 23, 2002 Altimeter? Hell, I just wait for my Cypres to fire. KIDDING! Usually 5-6 times per jump in freefall, then a bunch more under canopy.

sunshine 2 #11 July 23, 2002 I look at it about 2-3 times in freefall when i'm jumping from normal altitude (13500). When i jump from 9500, i usually look at it 4-5 times. It's much easier to glance at it when doing RW. Under canopy i check it ALOT!! ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! Vallerina 2 #12 July 23, 2002 Hmm...At my own altimeter....3 times or so (definately more when I'm sit flying, though.) But, I often glance at other's altimeters as well...not sure how often I do that....There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

wlie 0 #16 July 23, 2002 I don't keep count. I look at it anytime I need to know how high I am. In the plane, exit, freefall, canopy, all the time. Even with my audible.

narcimund 0 #18 July 23, 2002 I have about 100 RW jumps without an altimeter at all. My eyes might not be as precise as an altimeter, but they're more reliable. I know what 3000 feet looks like every time, but altimeters can stop working. People can also forget to look at their altimeter, but the planet's right in front of you bigger than anything. Besides, if you're relying on instruments to tell you what your eyes are so good at knowing, it's easy to ignore the signals all around you and lose track of altitude. Last year after 10 years not jumping I got back in the sport. I've been using an altimeter since then. I've noticed that I'm not as aware of the visual signals as I used to be. That makes me a little nervous and sad. First Class Citizen Twice Over
Zennie 0 #19 July 23, 2002 Pretty much never until I'm setting up my swoop.<>Despite that, my internal clock has gotten to where I pretty much know when the skydive is about over & the ProTrack is about to go off. Still, I prolly ought to get a second audible if I'm going to rely so heavily on it. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

skymut 0 #21 July 23, 2002 From the 182 at ~10k, usually about 3 times. If at another dz, or a big plane comes in, 13k, usually a time or two more. Of course, one day I would like to try a hi-alt (20 k plus), but I can see me tripping out when the alti reaches the 3 k mark (the first time) and pulling at 15 grand (talk about spinning down until you puke). quade 4 #22 July 23, 2002 Shooting video I look at it a bit in the plane. Almost never in freefall. After everything is good in the saddle and I'm about to stow my slider. Check for my set up in the landing pattern. Otherwise, usually 3 or 4 times during freefall.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
