Devil's Tower Base?

Recommended Posts

I am heading to Sturgis in a week and among other great scenery will see Devil's Tower, Crazy Horse, and Mt. Rushmore. It kinda got me wondering if anyone has ever based Devil's Tower. Anyone ever heard of that? It is 876' tall, and I am not sure about landing outs, but seems like it would be a sweet base.

Actually, it is a big climbing hotspot. What is the thing on your back? Oh that is just my quick deploy climbing recovery system...we are doing testing on it :)

On a somewhat related note, I had a friend at Grayson that went to Iowa state years ago. He had a classmate there that was an avid Harley rider, climber, and smoker. He would climb Devil's tower every year during Sturgis and leave a stash there to dry out for next year's smoke.

haha, damnit, I wish we weren't going to be so busy on Saturday so I could have gone up there, but then again I'm pretty damn happy we're going to be freak'n busy on Saturday, too...B|

i have never heard of anyone baseing on it. climbing is big, and last i heard was considered trespassing for the fact that it is on reservation land. but that all may have changed, i grew up 2hrs from their but i haven't been back in 6 years....
if fun were easy it wouldn't be worth having, right?

No, now it is perfectly legit to climb. You check in with park rangers before heading up. They have some guidlelines where they ask that you think twice about climbing in June due to religious holidays and significance for Indians, but they are not mandatory. As a matter of fact, a 6yr old holds the record for youngest climber to scale it.

There's at least 70 different defined climbing routes up to the top..... Although the wind would have to be going the right way, cuz here's what the landing area looks like..... (see pic)

First time I saw Devils Tower all I could think was whoa, I want to jump this......

I even asked the park ranger there if anybody had before and he grumbled at me and then told me to leave.......hahhahha .......fucker.....

Devil's Tower has been jumped.

Unfortunately, jumping Devil's Tower is illegal (to the tune of gear confiscation, $2500 fine, and a night or more in jail), so I'm pretty sure that no particular person who can be named has actually done any jumping there (that would be illegal, after all).

The jumpers have kind of mutually agreed to follow the voluntary climbing closures (to avoid drawing attention to themselves, as well as to respect the religious beliefs of the indigenous people). If you're going to jump, make sure you are familiar with the climbing rules.
