Fat Bastards Sue!

Recommended Posts

Taken from today's Metro (the Diet Coke of newspapers) :

Quote

Seven people who became overweight after eating burgers are suing fast-food chains for selling meals that allegedly cause disease and obesity. 'The fast food industry hs wrecked my life. I was conned, I was fooled, I was tricked,' said one of the plaintiffs, Caesar Barbar. The 20st maintenance supervisor has suffered two heart attacks and also has diabetes. Americans spend almost £70 billion a year on fast-food - more than they spend collectively on higher education, personal computers and new cars. Six in ten people there are now classified as obese and more than 300,000 deaths every year are attributed to obesity-related illnesses.

Hmmm, maybe there is a market there for Strong and Vector to sell modified tandem rigs as solo sport rigs...

All jokes aside though, that has to be one of the most ludicrous law-suits I have ever heard of - binge on junk food while spending all your free time on a couch watching TV, then sue the companies that you chose to buy the junk food from.... Incredible!

>has to be one of the most ludicrous law-suits I have ever heard of

I'll second that... Only in America!:|

I heard a rumor that there maybe a possibility of a chance that the ridiculous compensation system in the States might be changed to something more sensible sometime in the future? Specifically the amounts of money paid to people who sue large companies would be set according to the damage suffered by the person, and not the wealth of the company. The companies would still pay according to their wealth, and the difference would go to wherever...

Or am I just being over-optimistic?

makes as much sense as people smoking for 35 years and then suing the manufacturer when they get cancer. accept responsibility for your own actions! maybe they should have people sign a waiver before they can smoke/eat junk food/drive a car or whatever, same as skydiving...

Yeah! And I'll sue everyone who has ever raised a ridiculous law-suit, for causing me mucho mental anxiety:D:S!

And since many of them are filthy rich from the compensations they've received, I'll never have to worry about jump-ticket money again!

I heard about this on the radio this morning. I like what one of the DJs said:

"Tell you what. I think I'll just go down to thelocal hardware store, buy a hammer, beat myself over the head with it, and then sue the hammer manufacturer and hardware store for selling it to me."

Seriously though, I like the idea of suing these idiots for causing me the mental anguish of having to deal with their stupidity. Or, even more colorable from a legal perspective, for making me pay higher insurance premiums and more money for products because of the costs passed onto me defending their ridiculous lawsuits.

I'm really, really tempted....

220kgs X 2.2 kgs/pound. Damn, that would be really big.

I was thinking, yes, at 220 (pounds) I was not very happy skydiving, I could not jump my J-1/150 rig and could hardly fit in the plane with a tande.

I decided to change my eating and lifestyle. Damn, I could have just sued and been fat and rich!! NOTTTTTT!!

Once the plane takes off, you're gonna have to land - Might as well jump out!!

Everyone go ahead. Laugh and point.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Why do I say this? Because you, that's right, YOU will end up paying for this. You will pay for this and all the other insane lawsuits.

Some kid is shot in a drive-by by a gangbanger. Sue the comapny that made the firearm.

Joe is an alcoholic. It's not his fault, sue the distilleries and breweries.

Mary had just had to fit in with the 'cool' clique at school so she started to smoke. Thirty years later she has cancer and wants $4 billion in damages.

Bill got drunk at a barbeque and 'fell' into the hosts above ground pool (after being told to stay off the deck) and is paralyzed. He dove. Everyone knows he dove. There's no other way he could injure his head on the bottom of the pool without diving. But, the jury finds the manufacturer of the pool liable.

This lawsuit will be settled out of court. I'm calling it now and I'll take bets. The 'big 4' will pay some monetary sum and agree to offer better foods on the menu (which they do- ever have a Garden Salad at McD's?), donations to 'Overeaters Anonymous' blah blah blah. They will cave and take the cheap way out.

Why will this be settled? One reason only.

Juries are composed of stupid people. There, I've said it. I never, ever, have to worry about serving on a jury. On my last form for jury duty it wanted to know "How many years of education do you have?" I put down 18 and debated if I should just walk out and go home. Would I like to serve on a jury? Sure I would, but it just won't happen.

There needs to be an educational requirement to serve on a jury. To hell with 'fairness' and 'jury of his peers.' My peers have jobs. My peers have a decent education. My peers have other things in their lives than sitting in a courtroom hearing OJ's attorneys argue that the prosecuter's jewelry will influence the jury and hearing Kato say wether or not he saw or knew where OJ was the night of the murder- broken down into FIVE MINUTE FRIGGIN INTERVALS!!!!

It's not the lawyers. It's not the plantiffs. It is the system.

Not only do I agree with most of what you said, DBatt, but I'll add one or two thoughts of my own.

~Remember the helmet law? The seatbelt law? How'd those get started?
~There's a criminal lawsuit pending back east somewhere against a friend who "let a friend drive drunk"...yet this friend wasn't even at the party.

Those are the only additions I can think of right now...but they are in the same vein.

As to your comments about juries, having had that experience (and it's one everyone should have - teaches you more about "the system than anything else) - and being the one who was stuck with a stupid jury for 5 days' deliberation...and yes, I hung the jury based on (the lack of ) evidence. But it's not just because juries are stupid, I think it's also because there develops a "group" mentality, and peer pressure becomes enormous. I was "physically assaulted" (poor asshole didn't realize I was a blackbelt, and Irish to boot - gotta love that temper! LOL)(and I put that in quotes because he didn't beat on me, but he did touch me "inappropriately"). One of the jurors approached me halfway through the trial and told me they already knew the defendant was guilty, before the defense even started...yada yada yada...

Yes, they will settle. But will you buy the lowfat soyburger at Mickie D's? I won't. When I go through the Golden Arches, it's my ass which is gonna pay the price (and I have seen the insides of many McD's...lol...).

The old saying goes: you can't legislate against stupidity. However, I will say their attempts to prove that saying right results in damages to the rest of the population.

Just my .02...you can keep the change!

Michele

that is the Problem, right there! PEERS.
who are peers to criminals? who are peers to fat people who have no selfrespect?
do you think they'd prosecute someone who has a social deficiency like they do? no then that would mean they all have a problem. so instead they "us" are forced to lower the common denominator so all the fuking idiots feel normal.
we've turn into a nation of back biters and sore losers!
even wonder, If he is too stupid to put down the 47 burger who the hell gave him the iea to sue?
I cant wiat til I get home..I am gonna get rich...
you think the dumb have cliam to the wealt? what about a smart guy acting dumb?(as I usually do:S)

I may be wrong, here, but isn't there a poster in each and every McDonalds (as well as other ff restaurants) with the nutritional breakdown on every food item on the menu? If the poster says that a hamburger contains 2 million grams of fat, I don't see how this guy was "mislead."

On the other hand, because I so love playing devil's advocate, I have seen many many commercials which have outright lied about their product, and it has angered me that there is no accountability for truth in advertising.

Example, there was one of those Truth anti-smoking ads a few years ago which made the point that whenever a car is proven dangerous, the manufacturer issues a recall on it, and how many recalls on cigarettes have you ever seen? But this is misleading - car manufacturers do not always issue recalls on dangerous cars - they'll only do it if the cost of lawsuits and settlements are more expensive than the recall, and before anybody accuses me of getting all of my information from Fight Club, I have seen this statistic elsewhere. If anybody is interested, I'll post the reference. I don't have it handy right now.

I blame it on the school.

Truth?! ahh, truth is an illusion. its just one persons' version of bullshit that is the most easily acceptable by the masses! don't put to much faith in TRUTH, unless you like getting kicked in the face by the ignorant!
you show me a "truth" and I'll show you a different version of someone elses lie![:/]

Point taken, but as someone going into academia, it would be very difficult for me to stop believing that there is some truth out there, however elusive ... however paradoxical.

And if I stopped believing in truth, I'd have nothing else to believe in!
