tombuch 0 #1 July 28, 2002 I was recently provided with a copy of the New Jersey law that covers parachute jumping. It is Chapter 58 (16:58-3.1) and was provided as the CURRENT regulation by the Department of Aeronautics in May of this year (2002). Some of the very outdated by apparently still mandatory provisions in Subchapter 2 are as follows: b) "All persons engaging in sport parachuting must be 21 years of age or at least 16 years of age and have written consent from parents(s)..." c) "Student parachutisits must initially make at least five static line jumps..." e) "Each sport parachutist must be equipped with two airworthy parachutes on a single harness, consisting of a back pack with at least a 28 foot canopy, and a chest pack with at least a 24 foot canopy." f) "All sport parachutists must use airworthy instruments (altimiter, stopwatch, or both) for delayed falls of 30 seconds or more, or use an automatic opening device." r) "During actual jumps a large "X" shall be displayed on the dropzone..." s) All injuries by sport parachuting which require treatment or examination by a physician, or any property damage or injury to persons or property... will be reported to the division of Aeronautics immediately..."Tom Buchanan Instructor Emeritus Comm Pilot MSEL,G Author: JUMP! So, Icarus can start making a Ridicarus 24 and 28 with the approval of the state of New Jersey?Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics. pilotdave 0 #6 July 29, 2002 ...No officer, I swear I never jumped my illegal square parachute in your state before I was 21 years old... . Ya know what would be fun? All of us that have broken that law should turn ourselves in all at the same time. What do ya think the penalty would be? Dave

ernokaikkonen 0 #10 July 29, 2002 >ahahahahaha...a stopwatch..how reliable! > >"how high are we??? exactly 28 seconds"..lol Actually, the stopwatch was used in the old days because people didn't think an altimeter would be reliable enough! The line of thinking was something like: "This altimeter was designed to be used in a plane, so it might not work in freefall." Erno

Deuce 1 #17 July 30, 2002 God bless the pioneers of this sport. Without them and their trailblazing, I would not be skydiving as a hobby. Stopwatches and belly reserves. GUTSY.
Jasmin 0 #18 July 30, 2002 I grew up on a DZ and saw the hey days of jumping when it really was the case: "sex was safe and skydiving was dangerous...the days of round parachutes, front mounted reserves, static lines and cessnas (most of the jumpers at my DZ wouldn't know what a static line jump is! PLEASE NOTE I'M NOT CRITICISING SL!), wing-climbing out of ultralights, thinking 50 jumps was way experienced (), woomeras, bungies, the boycotting by tm's of drogues on tandems due to the "dangerous" threat posed by jumping them, broken backs from openings, $0.2 pack jobs, streamers to judge the wind, "Wally" being the coolest guy ever, the boycotting of microlines, PC meaning paracommander, parking the cessna in the hanger (it now houses the canteen, bar, 8-way room, freefly room, gear-up area, skysurfing room and the big screen tv!), and the week that 3 of our Islanders crashed. One into the dam (no handbrake on), one into a paddock (not at the DZ), the other on take-off with a load of jumpers. Nobody hurt in any of them! Y'anyways, here's to all the jumpers of the good old daysxj "I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with the earth...but then I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with a car either, and that's having tried both."
