I can fly - I just can't land!

I just need to learn how to land.

Oh? Is that all? ;)

Seriously, I watch people every weekend with a lot more jumps than you that for some reason haven't quite figured it out yet.

Landing can be a difficult thing for some people to learn. It's totally unnatural and something humans aren't born with, so don't get too discouraged.

If you see me on Sunday just sitting around doing nothing, come over and we can talk about it. Maybe we can bang out a few jumps.

It is called nipple flaring. Do you flare past your nipples? You should unless you are trying to win a no flare competition.

I have a female friend who does this all the time. The advice she got, "Grab the box!". It works too!

5. I was given the suggestions of both going to a Sabre2, and taking wraps up high. I declined taking wraps, because I thought I was being video'd and would be able to tell what's happening from that. Alas, it didn't get done, so I still have no clue. As for the Sabre2 try, I dunno. But I have heard that a 9 cell is easier to land. I will put up a post over on gear for opinions in the right place. Viking gave me the same suggestions as I had heard yesterday.

I think that BillVon already mentioned this, but don't rush to the Sabre2 thinking it will cure your landing problems. It's likely that the Sabre2 will present an entire new set of problems. The Sabre2, while having a slower decent rate, will have more forward glide (speed). Are you ready for that?

Hey Michele-
I'm not in the position to offer you any advice on the technical side of your landings, these guys are doing a great job anyway. But, as a female who also had a lot of trouble landing on her feet for awhile, I will tell you what my experience is between the Spectre and Sabre 2 .
I had much better landings with the Spectre by far. The surf on the Sabre 2 is a little hard to get used to, and I actually didn't start jumping it until I had over 100 jumps. And, actually, on no wind days, sometimes the longer surf still makes for some interesting landings. Finally, I'm running them out more than I'm biffing though. But, I just wanted to tell you, I think you would really like the Spectre, and in my opinion, the openings are better on it too.

I so glad to read your post. I can't land either! I've at least gotten past the point where I smash into the land (although, never had the bruises you describe!) but I don't stand them either. Ever since badly spraining my ankle I don't really even try. I don't know how to get over the feeling that I'm just going to do it again. Yesterday I landed really softly on my butt and I could have stood it, too bad I don't realize that before hand!

Anyway, I'm glad to see that not everyone gets this landing thing down quickly and easily.

Good luck. Wish I had a canopy school to go to.

Michele,

Sebazz, TEB, Bill Von, et. al. have given great advice. Get somebody to video you and maybe have one of the dudes from the school put you back on radio. I remember attending a seminar given by John LeBlanc. The topic: Landing. You are landing your canopy very similar just as a pilot lands a plane. You keep the basically the same visuals of the runway and not touch your landing gear until your airspeed is slow enough to touch down. Check the PD website as they may have notes on the seminar. Elsinore Evolution has some great canopy pilots, and may be available sooner. Above all, practice and be safe.

Chill girl!!!
You will so get it, by your words, you are in love with the air, so trust working with it when you land. Yes, look up, that was my biggest problem, but look forward and up, the whole way in on final...breathe...and talk to your canopy from the moment it opens to your landing...you control it! -Betsy at elsinore taught me that...
I am still such a rookie, but fortunate to watch the finest canopy pilots...some of which are at perris...I realized these are your wings...all yours....yes you can!;)

> BTW, did I mention I can barely land a Lightning?
Wheeew... I thought I was onth only one that was crashing under them. I've only fell on one landing (Triped on the tuffet) but its an intersting pound in landing every time. Its more of an impact I guess. I've wondered if the reserve lands softer if so.... :P

Crashing a Lightning SUCKS!!! They do not flare worth a damn. However, every one i have ever jumped was OLD and Yuck.

Michelle, try not to over analyze this thing to death. If you have found out that the canopy can flare and stop you down and forward motion then you just need to time it better. Remember how many landing you have total and in the last few weeks as well. Hell I ahve friends and teammates who have 100 times the jumps that you do and still land on their ass.
I had my canopy out of trim and had the break lines lengthened a little too much and biffed my landings for a whole day. That sucked. I even did the Wil E Coyote thing into a big pile of dirt at Perris. Point being that this is a judgement and skill thing along with confidence and it often takes time. YOU CAN DO IT. YOU WILL DO IT. I believe in you.

Lessee.....total landings: 36. Landing since July 20: 4 (and three of them were on Wednesday). Hmmmmmmm. Perhaps you have a point.

still land on their ass.

It's the part where I do the splits then whackthump to my chest and face. Bottom touchdowns are o.k. for me.

You are an amazing friend, as is everyone else who posted. It is immensely appreciated.

Hey Michele....
I just wanted to give you a ((((hug)))) of encouragement....

Remember that it took me 70 some-odd jumps to learn to land on my feet. The best advise I ever got was to stop looking at the horizon and scan from side to side....it seemed to help me. I WAS the faceplant queen....then I passed my title along to Canopycudler....now she has passed it along to Christina....

You will figure this out....and you will laugh about it. Then you will try to help the next faceplanter that comes along....that is the great thing about our sport!

Anyway....keep trying and keep writing your beautiful stories....

Hey Michele hun, don't worry you will get it, there is no rush, it's just one jump at a time. You've had to take some huge breaks between jumps and currency is a huge thing. Plus every jump you learn something new about your body in the harness, the canopy, the flare, it's always something new. So take a deep breath, relax and give it a full flare. btw...one short armed chick to another, do like bill von said, grabbing the toggles at the top having the line between your fingers, it works really well without affecting your canopy in full flight. I had to do that for 10 or so jumps cause my stearing lines were to long.
