QuoteBut I do appreciate the benefits of all the hard work other geeks have contributed into creating the quality we have.
PS- Thanks for the detailed info! It makes me want to read more in detail about RISC, CISC, BSD, and Macs.
:-) Excellent sentiment. You're one of few I've come accross who is willing to put forth the appreciation for the developers. Sadly many products are raced out the door and upon discovery of several performance and reliability problems are labelled "beta" which the manufacturer's insurance policy.
As to computers I posted some links on my personal site: http://earth.e-raist.com/~raistlin/synix.html. Its an outdated thing, but has some decent starting points. :-)
Any jumps today?

QuoteOne of the things that I really like about OS X is FINALLY, you can dig in and kill a process. For that matter, I'm just happy to have a command console.
No doubt. I just set up a new G4 last week for an employee, with the 23" flat panel - that's not a monitor, that's a decent TV.
Apple is doing some great things with their hardware/software and the technology is becoming more affordable and the unix base of OSX provides some great cross-platform compatibility. Samba, NFS, Apache, etc, all run fine on MacOS X. And the XServe is gorgeous and comes with a kick ass Applecare warranty. Its starting to compete with Sun for the server market, lets see how they do. :-)
How do you like OSX?

I'm totally digging on OS X. Where I work, on the macs that will support it, we are loading OS X, and trying to 'persuade' the staff to ween themselves off of previous os versions. I really like (for backward compatibility with apps) the 'classic environment', but it does run a bit slower, and a little resource hungry - but it is worth it.
As you mentioned, it's cross platform functionality is nice from what I've seen so far. I still have a bit to learn there. We are really trying to carve out some time to research, and test OS X authentication and security on our network, but you know how that goes with a 100 projects that need to get done before the start of the next school year (about 3 weeks away).
Our split at work is about 35 to 40 percent apple, and 60 to 65 pc. With just over a 1000 desktops, that means there are quite a bit of macs. Unfortunately (I work for a public school) we have to 'recycle', so we have some really old macs out there as well, so we keep babing them along, and obviously can't upgrade the OS. But, as we replace them, we are making sure that OS X is installed on the new ones.

Thanks for the links! I like the look of your site too. As far as appreciating developers, I work with a few developers who created our in-house database software that works with Oracle. So, I understand some of the work that they live and breathe. They're always working to improve it.
How's the new place working out for you? Did you move in yet?
I'm glad the links helped if you find any gems, let me know, Its always good to have resources to give people :-)

Of course, I like this one:

I cruise the forums here:
http://www.arstechnica.com
This one is excellent for security reference:
http://www.securityfocus.com/
This is a great site for hardware reviews:
http://www.tomshardware.com/
And for shopping, I go here (cheap!):
http://www.newegg.com

And as how I got into skydiving, just wanted to try it while I was still young. Speaking of, I'm a quarter of a century old today!

attrition.org is great :-) I remember having looked at that awhile ago, but its improved greatly.
My boyf and I watched 2600's "Freedom Downtime" which is available off www.2600.com. It was a great film done in the "Roger and Me" style of satire documentry. Something you may get a kick out of if, you enjoy attrition.org.
Well belated 25th Happy Birthday!
What else do you want to do while you're still young?

It has improved, yes. I think it's because of the turnover of webmasters. It seems they get new ones over time with new additions.
Thanks for the happy b-day wishes! And sorry for the late reply. Been busy getting ready to move.

Sweet!! I would be interested. I'll have to check it out. A co-worker of mine is suscribed to 2600 and I read the mags. It becomes over my head a little too quickly, and is frustrating when I'd like to understand everything. I'd love to absorb more quickly, as he does.

Ha! Not young anymore!

I know this thread is about pau (done) and oh well, I still responded, you are welcome to pm to reply if you'd rather. I know I have a few other questions for you still.

Mac is superior in that respect. But then again, they do make flavors of Nix'es that will run on a MAc. Heck for that matter NT4.0 will run on a Mac, although it's not supported any longer
