WFFC Accident

Recommended Posts

Ok, I just got confirmation from two sources.

It appears as if a non-skydiver photographer asked and was denied permission to stand in the cornfield to take photos of the chopper as it took off.

The photographer appears to have done so anyway and as a result the chopper hit the photographer in the chest and killed him.

Reports are that the chopper and all of its' occupants landed safely.

Let's keep Rod Tinney and the jumpers in his chopper in our thoughts and send out some good vibes to them. This is a horrible thing for them to have experienced.

Come on people, don't fret. A spectator bit it in a fashion suitable for a Darwin Award! If some idiot wants to remove himself or (herself) from our gene pool, let's just let nature take its course. :D

no fret but I wish they wouldnt do it at the SKYDIVER gathering. I mean we get enough bad media as it is now a nonjumper is a fatality and the FIRST!!! who buys beer?(sorry,I know that was in poor taste)

Exactly and to expound further on it this could really suck for us skydivers. I have no idea of what the agreement is between Don K (one of two WFFC organizers) and Rantoul but I'm sure that this particular WFFC in a brand new location is being closely scrutinized by the Rantoul during this infant year at this location.

Regardless of who was at fault for this fatality (if the reports are true I think we all know that answer), having a fatality in the first 24 hrs isn't conducive to getting off on the right foot with local officials. Could hurt WFFC location problems down the road.

Regardless; my condolences to his family. :(

Come on people, don't fret.

Actually, let's not take our eyes off the ball too quickly... there are people out there who's lives have just been changed forever by the loss of someone they loved. So what that he / she wasn't a skydiver or (allegedly) did something we perceive as not smart? You can quote me on this: I'll rather not skydive than loose my compassion.

My condolences to the family and friends....

Thank you for this post, HH. I agree that all deserve support in their grief. My condolences go out to this photographer's friends and family. I hope all at the WFFC extend the love beyond our circle and show compassion and inclusion towards them. We ask the same of wuffo's when someone we love goes it. Let's extend the same back to them.

You seem to place little value on another human's life. This person was loved by somebody ... maybe had a family... He/she made a poor choice that cost them their life ... Your attitude towards the unfortunate accident reveals much about you.

Well put HH...
My deepest sympathies and thoughts go to the family and friends of this person....
Also, my prayers and good vibes for safety to my skydiving brothers and sister, as well as the staff and spectators at the WFFC.

Hope that others can understand now why others make safety rules and why we must not break them. Safety rules are for safety, not for bothering the public, media and others. It is sad what has happened, please learn from this.

For those that think that it's a whuffo doing something dumb:

I am in champaign and watched the local news tonight...one of the lead stories was about the accident, and the fact it was not skydiving related aside from that it happened at the convention (but not involving a skydive) didn't matter to the news people. They covered the story asking people about the danger of skydiving and stuff about how "someting like this doesn't deter the participants from continuing. They do it for the love of the sport"....they BARELY mention the actual circumstances and focused on the fact it happened at a festival involving skydiving......

just a thought.
