FliegendeWolf 0 #1 August 7, 2002 Hmmm.... Not sure what happened. Unless I've been hallucinating, I was sure that Canuck had responded to a post of mine in the jumper burnt out thread asking me what gear I've been learning on. Perhaps his post was booted from the thread for being off topic. Anyway, I'm about 130 lbs. (without the rig) and I've been jumping a Falcon 235.A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
CanuckInUSA 0 #2 August 7, 2002 Wolf (can I call you that) I actually deleted that message as it seemed to be off the topic. But now that you've created a new one, I guess we can talk about our student rigs here. If I take your weight of 130 and add 25 lbs for your rig (just a rough guess) on your Falcon 235, your wing loading looks to be about 0.66 as opposed to my 205 lbs plus 25 lbs on a 290 F111 (I don't know which model my DZ uses) which gives me a wing loading of 0.79 ... now don't ask me where I'm going with this as I don't really know. I do think that your Falcon 235 is good for a person your size and experience (hell you'd stay up there forever if you were on the 290 I'm on) and once you become proficient in the sport you may be able to fly one of those handkerchiefs. Me on the other hand would be commiting suicide if I flew with a 97 sq.ft. canopy even if I was good with my landings. Anyway ... jump safe ... FliegendeWolf 0 #3 August 7, 2002 Call me Steve. I thought that FliegendeWolf was kind of a cool handle, but I don't really think it describes my personality. I was trying to come up with a name that would let me blend my studies with skydiving somehow. Now, classical music isn't exactly what comes to mind when you think skydiving. So I was thinking, and thinking, and thinking about my favorite composers and pieces, and I remembered Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman). I thought it would be cool to be the Flying Michiganisian, but that sounds dumb. Flying Wolverine? Well, that was too long. So shortened, FliegendeWolf had to do. Now, what was I answering? Ah yes, I actually asked my instructors about the 280s they have the other people flying and they said the exact same thing - that I'd be up there all day under one of those (also remember that on my last jump I pulled at 8K!! Imagine how long I'd be under 280 sq. ft. at 8000. If nothing else, I'd get my money's worth on that jump!!). I'm not in much of a hurry to jump anything smaller anyway. I still can't land this one well! I have been poking around the classifieds trying to get an idea what kind of used rig to buy, but that's in the future, too. My goal is to finish AFF this season and to really dive into the sport next summer. That's when I'll (sigh) take out my student loan (Hey, I'm learning to skydive), buy a used rig, and spend my weekends at the DZ.A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
CanuckInUSA 0 #4 August 7, 2002 Steve Well from what I've been able to tell, you'll have more options finding a used rig that I will. I'll need something in the 210-230 range while you'll be able to find something in the 150-190 range much easier (at least that's the impression I get). And as far as you pulling at 8000', better that than pulling at 2000'. I found my zone on the 2nd attempt at Level V (the only AFF Level I repeated) and since then have been jumping pretty relaxed and you'll find your zone one of these jumps as well. PS: I'm Steve as well, but you can call me anything you want. I just may or may not respond depending on what that is. Maybe I'll just call you Stinky! Could you really turn down such a great alliteration?
