My Intentional Cut-Away

Recommended Posts

B| Well, I finally had a cut-away! It was intentional though, so I don't think it really counts for anything other than me having a good time!

I borrowed a guys chest mount canopy and we put it on my rig and off I went !

It was a 22' round canopy on my chest and I was so nervous! With 570 jumps and I have not had a cut-away! I have been pretty anxious to have a cut-away (I know that probly sounds weird) But I wanted to have one.
So, I'm at 5000' and I hop out on my back and throw the pilot chute and out comes a sky blue round canopy! It was so cool to see a round above my head! (Cool, just becasue I knew I didn't have to land that thing)
So, after playing for a couple of minutes and checking it out, at 3500' I released the cables from the 3-rings and down I went!!!!! Woooo Hoooo!!!! B|B|B| I was back in freefall and screaming "YAAAAAAA HOOOOOOOO"!!!

Reached back grabbed my hackey and threw it out and watched my main open beautifully! Man that was a blast! I can't wait to do it again!

It was such a rush and it was so cool to get that huge nervous adrenaline going again!

And I know.... I owe beer! That's 2 cases of beer!
1 for jumping a round and 1 for cutting away!

Man I love this sport!:P

actually, i think it's only one case you owe, as multiple firsts on a single jump only count as one beer. of course, nobody will complain if you insist on buying more! ;)

Not a bad idea!

I haven't had a cutaway, yet, either (knock on wood.) I wouldn't say I'm anxious to have one (I'm pretty happy when my canopy opens square and steerable), but I also know I will feel better after I've had one. I've had line twists on several jumps. However, the line twists all happened on my old canopy which was so big, the damn thing was still square, even though I kicked out 8 times! I wasn't even spinning out of control or anything. So, I can't say I've ever had that nervous feeling. There's only been one time that I almost pulled my reserve. It happened when I couldn't pull my pilot chute out. I was yanking hard but the damn thing would not come out of the pouch. You know you're thinking so fast and in my mind I thought, "I'll give it one last yank and if it doesn't come out, I"m going for my reserve." I yanked hard and, thankfully, it came out." That was the only time I'd ever thought about my reserve in freefall.

I like the idea of an intentional cutaway. I wonder why they don't have a level like that in AFF. Like, it would be cool if there were an AFF level 8 where you had 3 parachutes on and had to perform an intentional cutaway. I think it would be good practice.

Anyone else?

I like the idea of an intentional cutaway, but not for newbies (myself included) and definitely not for an AFF student. They have too much on their plate and are too far into sensory overload already. Maybe for a D license or something...

I could agree or disagree with that. I see your point. However, there are many AFF students who end up having to cutaway, anyways, b/c of a malfunctioning canopy. But like you said, it might be more appropriate for a qualitfication of a D liscense or something.

I don't know about putting it in the AFF programs. I know I asked someone when I only had around 75 jumps if I could do the intnetional cut-away and they told me to wait until I had 100 jumps. That was just advice from an instructor.

The cut-away was EXTREMELY fun! Going back into freefall was cool!B| It was all planned though, so I know it's not like a REAL malfunction. I know kind of what to expect now though! And I plan on doing it again, just because it was so FUN!
