Microsoft Geek Certs

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I was wondering what you certified Microsoft Geeks thoughts about the tests and the entire process. I don't need to hear about how superior *nix is, or how Cisco certification is the way to go. My boss isn't paying for those. But since he is willing to pay for me to get some Microsoft certifications, I figure I'd be an idiot not to take him up on the deal.

The order I'm planning to work on is:
1. MCSA
2. MCSE
3. MCDBA
4? Maybe the MOUS stuff thrown in for giggles.

What method did you use to study? I have the Transcenders for the exams I plan to take, as well as the Exam Cram books. And I do use a good amount of the material in my work role, so I'm not planning to just be a paper pirate on the certs.

I registered for my first exam (70-210 Win2k Pro) for the middle of next month. Thoughts on what I should expect?

Thanks!

Yea, I used the MOC's and Transcenders and the Training Kit and experience on the job. If you're going to go for MCSA, then you might as well just get the MCSE instead.

The first two tests are quite similar, so try to take them close together. And good luck!

I was planning to get both. I can get the MCSA with less tests, so therefore, faster. And it only has one test that doesn't directly qualify towards the MCSE, so it isn't really much of a detour. It just gives some better short-term gratification. But I understand your point...

I dont know what class you are taking but I just finished win2000 pro and the test had absolutly nothing to do with the class. I suggest finding a third party study guide or you can go to www.cramsessions.com and get some help with it. I bought the guaranteed to pass stuff and it made all the difference.

Sounds like you are heading in the right direction with what you mentioned (books/transcender). Be glad the boss will pay. The transcenders will help mucho - how I studied/passed for the first four (I have stalled on the design exam - very boring stuff).
First, I read some type of exam book, cram or sybex. If there was any material that I hadn't seen at work, I created a test environment and worked it out (thus avoiding the 'paper pirate' you mentioned). The sybex test prep that came with the book was useless.
The transcenders were the biggest help in regards to passing the exams. I basically printed out the exams with the answers and explanations, and studied them thoroughly. My experience was this, if I could get to where I could pass the trancender exams consistantly with 90% or better (not memorizing), I could pass the exam.
Try to do 2k server soon after 2k pro, because there is a bit of overlap.
I need to finish my MCSE as well, I've debated getting the MCSA, but since I foot my own bill, am thinking it over. I too plan to work on the DBA as well, but one thing at a time.
Let me know how it goes.

Matt

I believe that you can now use the A+/Network+ tests to go towards your MCSA. Not only are these tests a little easier than the Microsoft tests (not as many f-d up trick questions) but they are multi-platform recognized. I don't know what your experience\history is but be prepared to study your ass off. A good indicator is if you can consistently pass the Transcender for the scheduled test, you should be ok as I have found they come close to mirroring or exceeding the difficulty of the actual test. Let us know how it goes and if you need any additional help
Cheers,
Jesse

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

My exam is Sept. 19th. You do get the pass/fail immediately, don't you? So I should be able to post when I get back to work that afternoon. From now until then, I plan to hit the books and practice software for a couple hours every day. I'll probably spend most of my work hours studying during the final few days.
