skymut 0 #76 August 20, 2002 In the early days, on my new canopy, busted my butt hard on a 'next to no flare' landing. Probably should have gone to the dr, as I had trouble sitting for the next two weeks. It hurt, bad...but it gave my wife something to laugh about. AndyMan 7 #77 August 20, 2002 If you look at my profile picture, you'll see me suffering from an evulsion fracture of the left ankle. I did this running. However, while trying to be gentle to my mostly healed left ankle, I gave myself an evulsion fracture to my RIGHT ankle, two weeks ago. I think maybe I should just flip that picture in photoshop... _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
billvon 3,114 #78 August 20, 2002 I tore my ACL in my right knee and damaged the medial meniscus; broke my left foot on the same jump. Note that this left me with no working lower limbs, so I was in a wheelchair for a few weeks before I could design an appropriate boot that let me walk with crutches. Cause was trying to land too close to the downwind side of trees. Canopy stalled at 50 feet, and I tried to stand it up. If I'd PLFed I would have just been black and blue. indyz 1 #80 August 20, 2002 Pulled the same muscle on the inside of both thighs running out a downwind landing. Pounded in landing uphill, couldn't kneel down for a week. Pulled on my back, got my ankle in the lines, hung upside down from the canopy. That hurt.
jceman 1 #81 August 20, 2002 Jump #371 - Jet Day - WWFC '98 - Helicopter Jump First one down (big surprise), decided to go for a really great surf...did 180 between the flag and the windblade. Gal following me said I bounced 3 times. Right femur exploded (ortho doc's word). Neck strained. My left side was one solid bruise from the sole of my foot to halfway up my back. I now have a 14" titanium plate alongside my right fermur, held on by 9 1 1/2" screws, the head of my femur is held together by 3 3 1/2" screws, and there are two stainless steel "tie wraps" around some of the pieces. Had a bone graft 6 weeks later. Mike Vederman gave me DS#2. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them? riggerrob 643 #82 August 20, 2002 Herniated disc in my lower back. It took me weeks to realizse the damage I had done. I did not visit the doctor until until sciatica caused my left leg to cramp so badly that I couldn't walk.
ltdiver 3 #83 August 20, 2002 Avulsed the ulnar collateral ligament of my right thumb after falling back on my hands during a landing (had less than 100 jumps). X-rayed it myself at work the next day....surgery a few days later. Completely healed with only a very minor scar. Nothing since then. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

reprobate 0 #89 August 20, 2002 I'm sort of hurt now. I was rock climbing and slipped a hand jam and pulled off my left thumb nail. Then, on my last STP with my instructor Cris Miller, I pulled the toggles down so far my hands drug on the ground. That hurt the thumb and I shoved my hand around. When I got squared away I noticed my left little finger was bent 45 degrees. I didn't think this was right so I straightened it out. In a couple of days it turned black so I went to the doctor and he X-rayed it and told me that it was dislocated and when I fixed it my self I fucked up and broke my own finger and it must now be be pinned in order not to lose range of motion and not be able to pick my nose. That's what he said. So I went to Michigan on a vacation and while I was loading a horse and mare in a trailer I jammed my finger against the horse. This hurt and I kicked him. He kicked back and stepped on my right foot. While he had me pinned he pissed on me. We decided Yellowstone was a better vacation spot and took AMTRAK from Kalamazoo to Salt Lake. We got a sleeper compartment because I was in pain but she made me take the top bunk and I didn't notice the safety net that went across them and got pitched out. This didn't hurt because I am used to getting kicked out of bed. In Yellowstone the best place to see Old Faithful is not the nearby bleachers but to climb a low hill and look down on it. If it's not cloudy you get a really good view. Anyway, my stepped on foot twisted and I slipped and sat on a rock and busted my tail bone. And now horse piss or something has got the foot infected. I guess this is skydiver related because of the little finger and now with it and my nail less thumb I'm wearing a guard on little finger and thumb and don't think I would be able to perform a cut away and reserve pull with best efficency so I have grounded myself for awhile. I really enjoyed the vacation tho.Carl

Phil 0 #91 August 20, 2002 I started jumping (aff and all) in june 2000. I’m Swiss and so my drop-zone is in the south part of Switzerland. I got my license in September and had about 54 jumps. On October 28 2000, I went to a different drop-zone in Austria and went for a solo jump out of a caravan. The jump itself was a non-event except that I was way out and nowhere close to the landing spot. I left the brakes stowed and was just working with the back risers to make my way back. To make a long story short, everything went well until I had to land and slipped on the grass landed on my butt. My legs were gone on impact. I was paralysed from the waist down. It took at least 5 minutes, until someone noticed, that I didn’t get up. They airlifted me to a nearby hospital, did all the x-ray and cat-scan stuff and I was high as kite on drugs. My wife and kids had seen me come down and it was very hard on them. Anyway I requested to be moved to a special rehab clinic in Switzerland for paraplegics. I went through surgery on Sunday morning just to stabilize my back. At this point I didn’t have clue what was wasted in my back. 10 days later I had my second operation on my L1. They had to reconstruct the whole thing and attach it to the T12. I had to sacrifice a rib. Got my legs back and after two and a half month in the clinic I was able to go home again. Worked only 50% until the end of last year. Everyday I had to go through therapy and it paid of. On march 10, 2001 I was back in the air for the first time again after the accident. To say at least - it felt strange. Was I scared- shit yes, but I had to do it. I had to get back on my horse. There has been some terminal damage done to some of the nerves, but nothing that would stop me from jumping.how high can you fly with broken wings ... life's a journey not a destination
jlmiracle 7 #92 August 20, 2002 My worst would have to be line burns across my face (cascade caught the corner of my mouth) I received in canopy collision. Had about 70 jumps at that time. Protec strap stopped the lines from reaching my neck. JudyBe kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

I'm very happy to hear of your success in recovery. Especially touching 'cause of a very close friend who's going through paralysis right now. He hasn't made it into acute rehab yet, but I will share your story of hope with him. If you have any words of encouragement for my friend, or words of insight, you can PM me and I'll see that he gets them. Again, thank you for your post. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

rhino 0 #95 August 20, 2002 Around jump number 170 I chose to make a really bright decision. I decided to hook my Triathlon150 1.2 loading right in front of the hangar at Spaceland with 30+ spectators watching. Not only that but I decided to do a 90 right then 180 left "which I had never done before" leaving my only out flying into hangar!! Talk about stupid!! I didn't plan, I hadn't prepared, and I had no business hooking a Triathlon. It was stupid!!!! I buried my knees "luckily it was very wet outside" right in front of everyone. Luckily I was flexible and in a full OH SHIT flare for my life when my knees impacted, my body went forward, canopy flying back up into the air, it pulled me back up, I had enough speed to fly back up into the air, flare the canopy, and have a great standup landing.. It didn't hurt right there. My pride was hurt because all the swoopers chewed my ass about hooking a canopy that wasn't made to be hooked, short recover arc and all. I didn't touch the front risers for another 20 jumps after that. I had to sleep with a pillow between my knees for 4 months.. I was not a happy camper.. I learned. Luckily I didn't break.. Sebazz1 2 #98 August 20, 2002 Besides little scrapes, scratches, sore back and muscles I have only two injuries worth mentioning. I broke my toe once on a tube jump. I have no idea how it happened just that it did. While swooping the spectator area in Monterey I clipped one of the flag poles with the left side of my canopy and instead of continuing to fly the canopy as it made a left turn I tried to get down as I saw the shuttle van coming fast. I thought I could get down low enough to go under the van anyway. But the five gallon buckets of cement holding the posts for the spectator area stopped me before I could get to the van. My ankle was pretty swollen. And it took several people to convince me that is was broke. I was swearing on my soul it was just a bad sprain. Well the x-ray prooved me wrong. No rods or pins or anything. Just a boot and no jumping for six weeks I got lucky that that was all that happened though......
freaksister 0 #99 August 20, 2002 My worst injury from skydiving other than my pocketbook has been my broken heart. When will I learn? Probably never. Nevermind the fact that I am still here, apparently asking for more. Oh sorry - did I lose everyone there? Well, forget it. It is just one of those mystery posts.
