September 11, 2002

Recommended Posts

September 11, 2002 is soon approaching. On that day, please wear red, white, and blue to work or school to show your support for those who lost their lives on 9~11~01 and to honor the heroes who worked to save them and the families left behind.

On September 11, 2002 at noon, no matter where you are or what you are doing, stop, put your hand on your heart, and say the Pledge of Allegiance out loud or to yourself and say a prayer for our nation.

By September 11, 2002 hopefully enough people will have read this and will join together in unity.

God Bless the U.S.A.

Nice idea.

I think a slightly more appropriate time is going to be about 8:50 am eastern time. I know I'll take a moment out at that time.

I hope there's also a moment at the Nationals where we can all do this as well.

I agree with Quade, I lost a friend in the Sept. 11 attacks at approx. 0850 hrs. that day will be forever burnt in to the hearts and minds of many people, I know 0850 is early and it may not be possible, but lets see how many DZs can put up a load at that time and do a memorial jump for those that lost their lives in the attacks. I just thought it would be a nice gesture.

Rhino,

I'm really glad you posted this reminder. Maybe it is my New York connections, but I wonder if people around the country really grasp the atrocities of what happened that day. I know for a fact that the New York metropolitan area is still really hurting over what happened that day. It does seem like a large percentage of the rest of the country has just gone on with their lives and almost have the "at least it didn't happen to me" attitude. Maybe society today is just complacent.

If a fortune teller had told me prior to 9/11/01 that terrorists were going to hijack a jetliner and deliberately crash it into the Pentagon, killing close to 200 ppl (the same number of ppl that died in Oklahoma City), I would have said it would be the biggest news story of the year. Then if they were to tell me, it was not even going to be the biggest news story of the day, I truly would have been frightened.

Maybe because I know 2 people who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald and whose bodies were never found, I wonder what the folks in the Trade Center went through the last moments. What about the folks in the Pentagon and on the 4 jetliners? How about the people who had loved ones who worked in these buildings but could not get on the phone for over 24 hours?

Does anyone stop and realize that there are people around this world who want us dead, just like those on September 11th, just because we are American.

This is really serious folks. It makes our petty little insults and criticisms seem childish.

I think another wonderful thing you can do on 9/11/02 is just do an act of charity, any act of charity. Contribute some good to this world.

I scheduled a CPR class for 9/11. So i'll be teaching other people how to help save lives. That's kinda respectable. :)

i scheduled a flight back from a miami business trip on 9/11. so i'll be trying to wring money from other people for my capitalistic gain. that's kinda... um... yeah... :D

steve

(notes for the particularly sensitive: yes, i also knew people who fell victim to the attacks. yes, victims and their families are ever present in my thoughts and prayers, regardless of what day it is. yes, unocal and bridas might just be cashing in... lighten up! :P)

And will be for some time. My brother in law missed being in that area by about an hour; I missed AA Flight 11 that morning by 20 minutes. Most of my family lives in New York (both the city and the surrounding area) and it will take a long time before things are "back to normal."

At the same time, as hard as this was to deal with, think about how this pales in comparison to war. Imagine a 9/11 event once a week. Imagine hearing jet engines and realizing that, with good probablility, the person in that plane is going to try to kill you - and if you survive it won't be for any other reason that you were not near the target. Last September we got a small dose of that. I hope it makes us realize that war is way more than an abstraction, a filler on page 3 of the Times.

Yep. I look forward to the day when we're seen as a somewhat odd, incomprehensible country halfway around the world instead of the country of satan.

Amen to that!

As long as Uncle Sam is the worlds 911 force I don't think we will ever have that peace. Unfortunately. It is a price that we are paying to protect freedom. I'm not saying I totally agree with how it is being handled, but if we don't do it who will?:o

I love and stand behind my country.

I sat at an Atlnta Braves game with my boss the other night. He and a buddy discussed that they would be attending the 9/11 game in Atlanta vs. the Mets. We spoke of how there will undoubtedly be some sort of ceremony or memorial marking the occasion at the game.

I piped up and siad that I would like to ask for that morning or afternoon off in advance to head the DZ for a jump or two. My half whuffo boss and his buddy both agreed that I should have no worries of work that day. They both expressed that my skydiving is a fine example of enjoying the freedoms that make our country great.

So will they be joining me to jump anytime soon??? Hell no! They'll just enjoy their season tickets to "America's Pastime".

I agree. We can keep being the world's police force, but we have to accept _beforehand_ that we are willing to pay for that position, and the payment will come in the form of terrorism like the 9/11 incident. And perhaps that's what we have to accept, although that's a hard thing for some people (New Yorkers especially) to stomach.

The UN. Once we start standing behind them they will gain a lot more power, and since they nominally represent most of the world, they are in a better position to both enforce worldwide law (against genocide etc) and deal with the consequences (terrorism.)

I've heard a lot of people say the UN is gutless and wimpy, but that's largely because we don't support them - we don't sign their treaties, we don't back up their decisions. Perhaps it's time we start, even if that means not being the world's cop any more.

That fateful day I told my boss I was going to leave early to go to the DZ - I remember it being an absolutely awesome day, blue skies and a nice gentle breeze. I'm going to do the same this year! One thing about the next few days after 9-11 was the weird silence in the sky- I never realized how nice airplane noise sounded, until it was gone!

Unfortunately we don't support them because of rampant hypocrisy in our own government. Funny thing is, the UN wants the US to adhere to the same standards that we want to force on everyone else, but for some reason that's unacceptable to our politicians.

I received this e-mail today.....

On Wednesday, September 11, 2002
everyone in the USA who will be driving a
motor vehicle is asked to drive with their
headlights on during daylight hours.

Though no explanation is needed as to
why we are commemorating September 11..................
we hope, more importantly, to pay respect to
the victims of that day, show our nation's solidarity and show
support for our men and women of the Armed Forces.

because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

Great request/reminder. I will honor that request.
I know that from time to time, I think about where I was, and how I felt when I first heard the news of the 911 attacks. My heart sunk, and I tettered on the verge of tears and prayed for unknown families at work all day. I will never forget.
And like what was mentioned above, the silence of airports following was eery. At the time, I was living just to the north of D/FW International, where at night you can count dozens and dozens on commercial planes zipping around. The empty skies following the attacks just seemed wrong.
