skip 0 #1 August 20, 2002 Does anyone still flat pack, and if so what canopy are you packing? I'm having trouble learning to Pro Pack and seam to have better luck getting everythign where I want it to be while flat packing. This is on a Sabre 170. .:skip
freeflir29 0 #2 August 20, 2002 I didn't learn to Pro Pack until I had about 120 jumps. I was thinking of getting a Stilletto and figured it was high time and fairly necessary that I learn. Up to the point I had flat packed many a student canopy and my PD 190. I noticed Fallinwoman STILL flat packs her Saber. Nothing wrong with flat packing most canopies. I just find that I get better openings with a Pro Pack. The way you pack should be the way YOU feel most comfortable.

skymedic 0 #4 August 20, 2002 Fallinwoman(Anne) does flat pack....A.she hasn't found anyone(except one person) to be able to propack it and have a good opening....B.she gets nice openings as it is...why break something that works....and C.she gets it done faster than I can pro pack mine...although her canopy is WELL LOVED...... I flat pack.....but only the base rig...and even then it's not a real flat pack like what you think of..... Marc otherwise known as Mr.Fallinwoman.... riggerrob 643 #5 August 20, 2002 Apparently Arizona Airspeed flat packs. Flat packing seems to work well with their small Stilettos. I gave up on flat packing in the mid-1980s: something about sore knees and aching back!
JohnnyD 0 #6 August 20, 2002 One of my AFF instructors - a famous guy back in the day - still flat packs a stiletto 120. He hasn't had a mal in over 3000 jumps. If you know what you're doing - flat, pro, or otherwise - you'll be ok.
BPO 0 #7 August 20, 2002 OKay. question: Is it true that flatpacking will always give a 90 degrees off-heading opening? I figure this is correct, because the parachute is packed on its side.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.. thanks. Blueskies..
smooth 0 #8 August 20, 2002 I flat pack. I jump a Diablo.
smooth 0 #9 August 20, 2002 Quote . . . Is it true that flatpacking will always give a 90 degrees off-heading opening? . . . Someone correct me if I'm wrong... You're wrong ! ! ! I flat pack and my canopy opens on heading. Occasionally I might have a slight right hand turn on opening but I think it's due more to body or leg strap positioning. BPO 0 #10 August 20, 2002 QuoteYou're wrong ! ! ! hehehe.. damn.. But it is more likely that you'll have an off-heading opening compared to when pro-packing?
SkydiveMonkey 0 #11 August 20, 2002 Nope, because the canopy is "put right" before you "wrap" the tail and s fold it into teh bag.____________________ Say no to subliminal messages
rhino 0 #12 August 20, 2002 I had about 80 jumps before I learned to pro-pack..
herv 0 #13 August 20, 2002 I flat pack my Sabre 170 and have great openings. I have about 230 jumps now and was slammed only twice (knock, knock, knock). The first slam was before I started tandem rolling the nose. The second one, who knows. I will tell you that practically everyone at my home DZ flat packs. But you get the idea. peek 21 #14 August 20, 2002 http://www.pcprg.com/packing.htm I "stack" pack my Stiletto, and even put packing tabs on it to make this easier. I have stack-packed several other high performance canopies and the people that jumped them did not notice any difference from the usual pro-pack. jimmytavino 16 #16 August 22, 2002 I have ALWAYS flat packed,,,,except the first 1000 jumps or so,,, when I flaked my French Papillon (round) and S folded it into a P O D ....(Who remembers what "standing tension" means???) Then I flat packed a strato cloud, and then an RW Challenger, for another 1,400 jumps or so....(never a mal.) NOW I flat pack a P D Spectre 210, again with no problems,,,,,,nice on heading openings,,,and never a mal....I figure, "why would P. D. put packing tabs on the parachute, if not to allow you to flat pack it???"...... by the way,,,, I don't call it "flat packing" anymore.... I call it "Pre Pro Packing" haha. "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"....jt
