happythoughts 0 #1 August 28, 2002 Today's USA Today cover is a pic of an "anonymous Afghan girl". Oddly enough, this girl who lives in an Afghan village has a great dental plan. Her teeth are straight and white. She has the time to correctly apply eyeliner too! I thought makeup was a western evil. The earrings are ok, I think, but the makeup was supposed to be against the rules. This reminds me of the Sally Struthers infomercial where all the children are cute little 7 year olds with big sad brown eyes. Any thoughts ?
narcimund 0 #2 August 28, 2002 I'm reminded of a news photo from last winter. It showed a little Afgan girl at an airport presenting a bouquet of flowers to her heroic American saviors as they arrived in her country. Oddly the bouquet of flowers was wrapped in clear cellophane and tied with a pretty mass produced bow. Obviously brought by the Americans from an American flower shop. Just one more sincere moment brought to you by the image producers behind most American perceptions of the world.
