Nonsense patents are often issued that a) invalidate new patents and b) get voided almost immediately when they are challenged. The patent office simply doesn't have the resources to check out each patent for validity and originiality. The popular conception - "have an idea, get a patent, make a million dollars" doesn't make much sense. Might as well say "go to the bank, open an account, have a million dollars in it."
