jbrasher 1 #26 August 30, 2002 I agree with Bill. I had 48 jumps before I was cleared to flat-spins when I started and I wondered if it was for me, too. At that time they got the biggest/fatest JM to take me out on a harness hold and blew my mind. I had no trouble with sL/DRCPs but the clear and pull was the hardest jump for me to do. Ypu need a good dose of freefall to get the feel of the arch. Red, White and Blue Skies, Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
dbattman 0 #27 August 30, 2002 I agree with Tami and Co. Muscle memory. I did SL about 1.5 years ago, and when I was at the DZ during that time I was wearing a training harness all the time. I went through FJC and had to come back the next weekend, but I probably had 50 practice EPs before I even got in the plane. Inside the mockup, focus, climb out, hang, release, EPs. Hard arch everytime. Then I got the PRCP. Again- on the ground, arch, pull. repeat. Then back to the mockup- climb out, release, arch, pull, EPs. I was off the rope in five. Plus, I relaxed and didn't rush. My zero sec looked more like a three to five second on video. I even paused for a second with my hand on the hackey- 'yup- that's the right thingy' Don't give up. Practice. And better than that- practice perfect.
bluefingers 0 #28 August 30, 2002 Hi I did read Wendy's logbook - thanks for posting it! It feels so much better to know that I'm not the only one who has battled! I am counting hours until Sunday ,,,, Thanks for all the advice AFF - don't know if I can scratch the money together at this point but will chat to the CI. Muscle memory - has come up over and over so therefore, I am arching at every moment Have a great day all Blue skies Kerry Kerry

Brisco 0 #30 August 30, 2002 Man, it's been great reading all these encouraging posts! I've only done 9 jumps and did the "helicopter manuver" on #8 (scary, but still fun) and lost altitude awareness on #9. Maybe there's hope for me yet! Thanks all! nacmacfeegle 0 #31 August 30, 2002 Hey Blue....Lots of good stuff here, Tammi is right about the muscle memory, she will keep you straight. Anyone who makes an honest, decent man out of Scotty deserves respect . Your not alone in struggling with early jumps, I was a flailer on S/L, one tip that seemed to help me was to focus on a point inside the cockpit on the roof, and keep your eyes on it throughout the exit. This helps you maintain heading, and keep the arch on. It worked for me.... Good luck, skydiving is not easy, and its not natural, but will feel easy, and second nature pretty soon. Its a big buzz going from 5 second delays to 10, its the last time in your progression that your freefall time will double. Above all though, enjoy it, if it ain't fun don't do it. And let us all know how yu are getting on.
bluefingers 0 #32 August 30, 2002 Yip - this forum is great! And don't you worry - you will get a second by second description of the jump (s) on Monday! It drives my whuffo friends nuts! I feel rocks - if I have to endure hours of conversation about clothes, nail, hair, shopping *YAWN* then they can damn well listen to my FAR MORE Exciting weekend activities Kerry
rapper4mpi 0 #33 August 30, 2002 I'm an instructor at a S/L dropzone. It is not uncommon for students to pull unstable on their 3 second delay. In fact, it can be HARDER for them to pull stable because they don't have the time and relative wind to really help their arch. Your biggest hurdle has been your inability to stay current, not your lack of skill. It is so crucial to stay current in those beginning 50 jumps or so. My suggestion would be to really give yourself a weekend where you concentrate on your exits and make as many jumps as possible. As long as you are being safe and have good judgement, you'll be fine. Good luck! -Rap
jumpy 0 #34 August 30, 2002 I completed S/L a while ago as well and didn't have to many problems with it but now i'm having to work on my fall rate and being forced to do that arching on the floor again just like back in that first jump course lol My point is that no matter who the person there going to find some aspect on the sport difficult. Those students you see rushing ahead of you you will rush ahead of oneday soon yourself Also if you ask many instructors they'll tell you that they were pretty bad students themselves and thats why they became instructors, to help others through all of the difficult things they've already done. And finally when your going up to do your jump never think about not being able to do it! You can do ANYTHING you want to do and you WILL do it lol) Good luck to you!
