There are still 790 emails in my work inbox...

Recommended Posts

I hate the first of the month.

I check my email first thing when I get to work in the morning. Today I had 850 emails waiting for me. Holy long time downloading batman! And that's nothing... one day I came to work to find 1000+!

Why? Well, we do a monthly special/contest email that is sent out to everyone who has registered on our website (note: it is not sent out to those who email any @square1.com address asking questions or placing orders, nor do we harvest email addresses from orders placed from our website - we hate spam as much as you do). We send the email out on or real close to the first of every month. All the "bounces" - bad email addresses, those who've changed emails and not updated their registration and those whose hotmail accounts are over the storage limit - come to my inbox.

So tomorrow I get to wade through 790 emails, collect the "bad" addresses and put them in a text file so one of our webgods can remove them all from the database.

They keep telling me what I do was more work in the days before computers. I think they're lying to me.

Get any of the "Gain 3inches" or "Penis enlarger" or my personal favorite "increase ejaculation by 381%!" spams?

Yup. At least 10 per day. Along with the "buy Viagra online", "free porn passwords", "refinance your house", "see me naked on my new webcam", and the Nigerian millions scam.

Those were the 30 or so I deleted as soon as they came in. Which left the 790 for tomorrow and the 20 or so legitimate work related emails that I answered.

Do you know how to set up filtering in your email client? If you don't, have somebody show you, then filter all of the bounced messages into another folder and take care of them when you have time, instead of clogging up the whole inbox.

Problem with that is... out of sight, out of mind. If I leave 'em in the inbox, I'll deal with them a whole lot sooner than if they're hidden away in another folder.

Hmmm... there's an easy way to do this... :)
Filter all the bounced emails to a directory. Export that directory to a file - basically in any format, and then get an Email Sniffer to go through that file and grab all the email addresses for you. Export the results to a comma delimited file and give to the techie. Will take minutes.

I'll email you a shareware program this evening when I get home that I use for this.

Also, you may want to validate your mailing list before sending emails. You can do it from your PC with no server. Follow the link below to a great set of mail tools. Check out the Advanced Maillist Verify and the Advanced Email Extractor. I use the first but use a shareware program for the latter. B|

Even easier way ;)

Setup some mailing list software designed for the purpose (NUMEROUS ones are available for free, and widely used for public mailing lists on the order of hundreds of thousands of subscribers)

Any modern mailing list software will handle bounces completly automatically. There are tons of different ways to do it, all of which result in on outcome - no manual handling of bounces :P

Almost all allow verifying subcribers before subscribing them to the liist, etc. Most are also hella fast.
