Back from Nationals 2002 @ SDC

Recommended Posts

My first thank-yous have to go to Team Rebellion; Chris Riley (aka Albatross), Steve Stratton (aka cptnstratn), Melanie Curtis (aka curtismelaniej) and Jacintha Toro for inviting me to shoot their intermediate 4-way team. With the exception of Jacintha, they all have about 500 jumps each and this was their first Nationals. Jacintha has given them a very good introduction to what 4-way is all about and as a rookie team have made a tremendous amount of progress this year.

I had heard a lot about Skydive Chicago and was anxious to see exactly how it matched up with my imagination. I -could- be glib and draw a lot of comparisons to a lot of things, but the facility is top notch and I have only praise for it. It is amazing to see a facility like that hosting as many people as it does and still remain essentially spotless. Fantastic.

Lastly, I'd like to thank all the folks that came up to me and said hi. I'm sorry I didn't have a whole lot of time to chat with as many folks as I would have liked, but during team stuff, well, my time is not really my own and afterwards, I sort of had to bug out to catch a plane.

Sounds like you had a good time, thanks for the pics, that's cool.

Its cool you put a profile pic up, now we all know what you look like. Careful, though, now Clay knows what you look like too... :P

There's really no story to tell other than about 3 months ago I had the Professor do a little spying for me and take some photos of the camera flyer's offices on the SDC Otters. I'd never jumped at SDC before and wanted to know what type of set up they had.

Truth be told, I had far more trouble with the Eloy Otters, but I had jumped those before and learned how to deal with them previously.

Still, both the SDC and Eloy Otters left their marks on -me-. I went home with far more camera flyer bruises than normal.

Glad you came. I never had the chance to see who was around from DZ.com, but your face was familiar from this weekend. Lots more cars and trailers than usual.

I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. I keep falling out the door of the plane.

You say that like I wouldn't remember Chris introducing us! I mean, I suck, but not normally THAT bad!

I really appreciated the personal attention you seemed to be giving me every time I walked in the room. Vanity would say you were treating me special, but I have a feeling you probably made everyone feel that welcome -- and I'm certain everyone else appreciated your hard work as well.

I have no complaints whatsoever about SDC. I had heard several nightmares which all turned out to be non-issues. The facilities and people there are absolutely top notch.

I, along with EVERY 4-way camera flyer, did have one beef early on in the dubbing & judging process, but that was taken care of by the time I walked in from jumping round three. About the only fault of the entire event as I could see and totally avoidable in the future by just doing a little math beforehand. ;^)

I do video at various times and I have bruises from time to time on an arm or wrist, even though I can't remember what happened. I'm beginning to think it's from the seat belt rails or climb-out, and it just gets swamped by more important thoughts.

Camera flyer bruises are caused by climb out. In the case of the SDC and Eloy Otters, it's the nylon tracks that protrude from the rear door edge that catch the left leg and the particular hand position on the floaterbar during climbout that catches the forearms.

Watch for them on the left shin, knee and thigh as well as the left and right forearms.

If you don't know somebody at a DZ and see this particular pattern of bruises, you can sometimes freek them out by doing a Sherlock Holmes analysis of their bruises and then tell them how they got them. Might make for a good pickup line in a bar. ;^)
