Who here prays regularly?

Recommended Posts

We've discussed religion a ton of times. It got me wondering. Who here does some form of praying regularly and what type of prayer do you say? Do you only pray when you want something? Do you pray when you see someone else is in need? Do you do it as a daily or weekly practice?

I guess this is an appropriate thread the day before 9/11.

Trying to be in tune with myself and the world around me is sort of my prayer.

I used to meditate for 1/2 hour daily. I've since fallen off that. I really need to get back into it. It's amazing how much better I am able to deal with things when I meditate regularly.

I rarely pray to ask for something, but I often offer up a hearty thanks when things are going well or I take a minute to relect on the good things in my life. Then there is always a big THANK YOU when my feet are firmly back on the ground after a skydive LOL

my wife and i were raised in the lutheran faith, and we have bible study each and every evening, and mornings when time allows, when it doesn't, we make time, even if it's just a couple of minutes. were not "bible thumpers" but we do believe in god, and we do attend church. we have a bible study guide that is issued by our church each month called "portals of prayer" that is an excellent study guide, plus on the net, there is "Bible Study" which e-mails me a complete study guide each and every morning, so no matter if i'm at work, or in my office at home, i can still be in the word, AND it's non denominational, includes ALL faiths, genders, sexual preferences, etc...there's something here for everyone, singles seeking christian mates, studies on world leaders, too much to describe, go have a look.

I pray a lot b/c it helps me stay close to God. I also pray if I or someone else is in need b/c God listens to his children and cares for them just like any good father does. (although like any good father he disciplines too if need be) I don't like to consider it a 'practice' b/c it shouldn't be drudgery or some rote recitation that only comes from your head and not your heart.

God answers prayer, especially if you pester him a lot! (see below example :)
Luke 18:
1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.'
4"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' "
6And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

I think there are more prayers said in jump planes than in a lot of churches. We just don't advertise to much..

my observation is the same. i say the "apostle's creed" each time i jump, on the ground, and before gear check at 8K, then i make the "sign of the cross" on my chest, and heart, and i see a LOT of others doing it as well. i think a lot of sky divers are afraid they will be ridiculed for being "soft hearted, or religous" i, personally admire an individual who is "in tune" with their creator, whomever that may be. (in their minds, everybody has their own beliefs)

If you are His child and see Him as your Father and Creator and as a being who truly cares for His own, why wouldn't you pray. It is through study and conversations with Him that we come to know Him better. I pray daily and often and about anything that is on my mind - especially for my family, my friends, and my country.

It's really my impression that the average skydivers ain't the religous type.
I've never seen God up there in theh heaven (only a few cute skydiving angels :)

I was seeing God when I had my reserve pull in Nov. ;)

I'm an anti-sectarian... I believe in God and Jesus... but I can't stand religious pariahs who spew animosity at people... I also despise people who
live high on the hog based on their faith (read: evangelists).

We have one very prominent evangelist in San Antonio that lives in The Dominion (where David Robinson, Tim Duncan live). He has a palace some of us call "The Cult" over on the northside of town. Listening to him many times, his fire and brimstone prophecies are very effective at scaring money out of his worshiper's wallets. Despicable.

I go to a Catholic university in San Antonio and also have my own grudges and grievances with Catholicism... so instead of tithing to a church like I was raised to do, I instead volunteer my time instead to causes, which is much more valuable, in my opinion, than fattening some lethargic organization's wallet.

I agree, and I think it has a lot to do with the fact that skydivers in general are both passionate people and people who follow their own compass (as opposed to being 'sheep' if u know what I mean). My theory is that because of this you won't find anyone who is religious just because their parents were or because someone respected said it or b/c it is socially acceptable. They just don't care about those factors. This is admirable and far better than the alternative and is one reason I love to hang around skydivers even though sometimes they get a 'little' too 'wild' for my comfort. Heck, at least what I see is what I get most the time and people are at least trying to be true to themselves and their own convictions. (even if a little misguided at times :)) But the 'religious sheep' are far worse b/c "God spits out the lukewarm". They are more detestible than a full blown "hells angel" b/c at least the biker 'knows what he's about'.

So what I am saying is that in reality many religious people are just being sheep and trying to ride into heaven on the coat-tails of their pastor or whoever, but since skydivers in general are not the sheep type you don't get many religious people unless they truly believe it themselves. (i would hope)

No sir. I don't like it. I am an extremely tollerant guy. I however don't pray as I believe religion is one of the greatest causes of trouble in the world. Look at all the worlds conflicts at the moment. If anybody needs a pretext to do something evil, he uses religion. Religious fundamentalism is the worst kind of insanity. You don't need religion or idols to be a good person. You do not need the 10 commandments to know what is right or wrong. You don't need God to tell you what to eat, drink or how to dress. That is all false!
I talk to the sun, to trees, to animals. I direct my thoughts to the sky. I have seen so much evil done by religious people or men of faith.

I disagree - it isn't the religion that causes the trouble - it is evil people using religion. There is a difference IMHO.

I don't pray regularly or out of habit but I normally thank "the Lord" every time my canopy opens.

I also say a short prayer on the ride to altitude praying that all skydivers have safe jumps that day, landing softly, injury free, under their main canopy. This is usually ended with the sign of the cross and I often see others doing it. (this really shouldn't seem odd, ever watch a baseball game) ;)

Yep. The bible also warns about something similar:

"These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men." (Isaiah 29:13)

I think it's important to not blame the religion, but the actions. A lot of the trouble in the world would not be if people had been true to their religion.
I'm not a tolerant guy>:(! I judge people by their actions, not their belife or ethnic origion. Religion is a personal matter. Personally, I don't get it. However, if someone want to pray before they jump, I won't ridicule that and smack everyone who does. (Make fun of someones religion is an action I wont tolerate).
Politics is giving religion a bad reputation, I believe in seperating them.
Also, I belive a hercules should be used to drop fun loving skydivers, not bombs!:)-fudd

Well sorry to disagree, but religion is made by people for the purpose of exersizing power over people. Everybody says that their religion is the true one, well which one is true in that case? Did God come to the Jews and tell them not to eat pork and shrimp? Did he come to the muslims and tell them to chop thiefs hands for stealing? Did he come to Chrisitans and tell them to crusade and spread his word bu means of sword and fire? Why do orthodox Jews wear those ridiculous black suits and hats in 100 degree heat? Did God want them to be uncomfortable? The list can go on for hours and be stuck to every religion. I fully appreciate and respect your right to your religion. I just find religion (any) to be corrupt and hypocritical. Religion in my oppinion is the sum of all human fears.

I pray everytime I am on the plane riding to altitude and always thank god for everything and ask for the safety of every skydiver, ask for no accidents on Taxi, take off, ride to altitude, exit, free fall, opening, canopy ride, landing of the skydiver, landing of the plane and for the spectators (no collisions).
