AOT--story unfolds

Recommended Posts

For anyone who was considering the drive or was there and left early, today turned out to be one hell of a skydiving day, once people started getting off of work and stuff and coming in. The boogie started off to a slower then expected start, only flying 3 loads by noon, one of which was a load from 20k (my first, beer). All in all, it turned out pretty damn good. Tomorrow (Saturday) is looking to be one crazy fun filled day. By the end of the evening, we had atleast 70 people at the DZ and the party cranked up quickly. With a DJ spinning tunes we partied for a few hours then attacked Northgate (THE strip of bars in College Station) with a large group of skydivers. So far we have had about 20 or so DZ.commers show up, so we're planning some sweet DZ.com loads, I'll let you know how those turn out. :)
Stuff going on tomorrow (satruday): lots of loads, high altitude loads, free food that night, free beer, free FF coaching/organzing, free RW coaching/organizing, free CReW coaching/organizing, canopy coaching (free, once again), a party that night with a DJ spinning, disco ball, lights, smoke, crazy skydivers...f**k'n A! :P

SAD news: Mike Gahan, most of the people from around central/south Texas who have been jumping for a while will know him. He's co-organizer for this boogie, an old AOT jumper, pilot for SD Houston (waller). Well, he hooked in this afternoon. He's alive, although watching him hit, he shouldn't be. He has, as far as we know now, torn all the muslces in his neck. ALL of them! Fractured virtabre, pelvis, hip and a few other things. He doesn't have insurance, so we're going to be starting up a fund for him to help him out, 2 specialists are being flown in to work on him and that's just the beginning. So, please keep Mike in your thoughts and prayers and I'll let everyone know how they can help, once everything has been setup.

[unsure]DANG,sorry to hear of a brother hooking it in,my families prayers will be with him. I hope the rest of boogie is incedent free and good times are had by all.
Wish I was there or anywhere for that matter and able to jump but I'm recovering from a bad swoop of my own and this broken tib/fib is gonna keep me down for awhile.
I WILL NOT BE BOUND TO THE EARTH,I WILL SOAR AGAIN!

Dave, too bad about the incident, but it sounds like yall are having a good time.

As for your friend with no insurance, I recommend he claim indigency. My ex-roommate piled in down at Z-hills after he got out of the army and the VA and the state ate the cost of all his hospital and life-flight costs. At any rate, it is very unfortunate when someone goes in, but it is a risk we take every single time we exit the aircraft. I hope the man recovers fully and in a timely manner. Best wishes.

Chuck

SkymonkeyOne is correct, that is one way. He can also talk to the people from Medicaid. They will cover costs. Have Ericka talk to those representatives from Medicaid at the hospital and they will retro his eligibility. If he gets transferred to Houston its all good. I know all the Sports Orhos and I will ask for a favor. And there should not be professional fees. One man here is the best. And he donates his time.

Two things here....
For Skydive Houston to SHUT DOWN and allow their staff to go to support the Memorial Boogie at AggieLand and in addition have a fun jump day is just incredible. That says alot. They would have had plenty of jumpers show up on Friday to jump - I would have been one. But they chose to let that be an AOT day.

Next, the pilot who had this accident is one of the nicest men I have ever met who flys jumpers. On the Memorial Jump for Mike Goodman, he was instrumental, instructing me just when to drop my garbage bag full of flower petals over the crowd at about 40 feet over the runway. (I couldnt see & my arm was trapped in the door)

He always picks me up when I land way at the end of the property. Last time he picked myself and Levin up. Then he promptly apologized for the landing spot. Which was NO fault of his.

He wont let you out of the plane if the spot is long and I havent ever seen anyone ask for a go-round. He just does it.

Once the sky was iffy. Before we left the boarding area, he turned and the jumpers on the plane and basically took a vote. He wanted to do what we wanted to do. Well, it didnt work out so we rode to the runway and back. But it was nice to have been asked for our opinion. He was honest. He turned to us and said -"Im not sure, what you yall want to do?"

Sincere best wishes to our Pilot and for a speedy recovery we pray.

I am sorry I could not make it to AOT, however my hopes have been that it is a very successful event this year. Its certainly a worthy cause.
