jraf 0 #1 September 16, 2002 Hear thee, hear thee I have had a couple of interesting firsts this weekend. The first first was my premiere in the world of off DZ landings. Doing a three way we exited too far and I must honestly admitt I opened lower than planned. I pulled at 2,500 feet and possibly/maybe could rear riser it to the DZ, but I had a line of trees right on approach so I took the safe way out. I have a red jump suit, so the initial decision not to choose an out in a field full of bulls was probably just. I mean a corrida with rig and canopy in hand is a less than ideal option. The other field looked great. Nice spot of green grass with lots of mud, but what the heck. About 30 feet off the ground I was able to see that it was not mud. The field was covered with cow shit. I was panicked at the view of large piles of fresh manure produced by prime USDA steak to be. Well that resulted in a butt slide and a landing in between steaming heaps of shit. Yeeeeehaaaaw! My friends swore they found spots of it on my suit, but smell test prove the contrary. My pride might be hurt, but my body is intact?jraf Me Jungleman! Me have large Babalui. happythoughts 0 #2 September 16, 2002 There is a landing guideline for Florida jumpers that goes like this: If you look down and see a large, flat, green spot and there is no cows on it, then it's a lake. In a lot of places, you will see a stand of trees in a semi-circle and next to it is a flat, dark green circle. It's just a lake covered with plants. Galen 0 #6 September 16, 2002 I got out just a little bit after jraf. I opened higher but was in maze of clouds. I wasn't actually in a cloud just surrounded by them. By the time I got my bearings I realized I wasn't going to make it home. So, I found the most remote field just off of a dead end road. Didn't land in any cowshit but I had to be very careful where I stepped. It was like a minefield. Eventually I was found. Respect the Dolphin
Cajones 0 #7 September 16, 2002 Are you going to finish the story Quatorze? Is this the one about the tree that jumped up and grabbed you, or the one when you landed in the goat pen and it took you 3 days to get out? The only time it's encouraged to land in a cow pasture is in the early morning after a rain storm... That's the ideal harvesting window. The laws of physics are strictly enforced. jraf 0 #8 September 16, 2002 You are right - my normal pull alt is 4,000. This time however it was a three way and I tracked away and I let myself stablize out of the track. I did that as on Saturday I had a hard opening, when I did not slow down enough after tracking. It hurt! The 2,500 feet were low, yet still if I had any doubt, there was time to cutaway. The problem is the decision would have to be made within a split second - no time for deliberations.jraf Me Jungleman! Me have large Babalui. bbarnhouse 0 #9 September 16, 2002 I had a long spot at Skydive Oregon and ended up landing off. In a clearing between some trees.. Didn't realize it was uphill in a cow pasture til it was too late. Was a bit of a hike back to the DZ. Only time I landed off there. Course Clay might like it as there are lots of sheep too
riddler 0 #10 September 16, 2002 In Colorado, the cow shit freezes over the winter and it's so arid, it doesn't disintegrate. Just lies there and dries up and eventually blows away. But you don't want to land on frozen cow shit. They're like smelly boulders.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
