How many cutaways is.....

Recommended Posts

to many?? i had my third cut away this weekend. that is three chops in 215 dives. this is the first chop due to my own packing error. i some how packed a line twist the ended with a huge pressure knot under my slider. the other two chops were do to one brake lock that i shouldn't have chopped but do to the fact that i only had 30 dives and only knew that i couldn't get the brake out and the second time i chopped was due to a skysurfing incident were my cut away cord had slipped over my knee and when i went into a sit spin it cut one of my bindings and instead of choping the board i tried to save the board and dumped my main that just got everything fucked up.
well this weekend while i was waiting on my rigger to get me back in the air, one of the skydive az's best FF and camera men made the comment that i had a lot of cut aways for my low jump #'s. he also stated that maby it was time for me to review my packing habits. but like i stated before this was my first packing error that resulted in a cutaway. he just shruged.
so am i just being sensitive or was he just being a asshole??
and how many cutaways is to many???
thanks for letting me rant and get this off my chest.
if fun were easy it wouldn't be worth having, right?

How many cutaways is.....to many??

One is too many in my opinion. In a perfect world that main parachute is all we need. Unfortunately the world is not perfect so we have that reserve. It is such a sweet thing when it comes out perfectly when needed. Congrats on your 3rd and may it be your last![:/]

Sounds like that "asshole" was trying to save your life. We need more 'assholes" like him on most DZ's.

How many is too many? How many scare you? If you have another 5 straight... will you be scared or accept them? My DZ has over 70 reserve rides, some intentnional, others cutaways in 15000 jumps.

You might want to look at the factors leading up to them. If its poor packing/packers change that. If its due to your discipline, change it or make it safer. If its due to lack of experience, get more experience or get out. Its when you are scared of the next mal and you start doubting your self is when you become a danger.

Wow, 3 chops in just over 200.... seems way to high to me... but what can I say... my first was after 2500+.... total of 3 in 5200+...

funny you should start counting.... I'm trying to figure out a good friend's record of 3 in 70 jumps....

I'm concerned, but I also remember that one of the senior jumpers from my start date had #3 at jump number 39..... that was 1 per 13 jumps....caught my attention then...

hey d16842 i wasn't replying that he was a asshole, i was saying was he being a asshole oh and just for the record my question was how many cutawys is to many. but hey thanks for the advice i really needed it. >:(

If you go back and read your post you will find you asked two questions, the first one being was he an asshole or were you being sensitive. I was answering the first question.

As for my comment, at times the easiest thing to do is walk by someone and say nothing, because anything you saw will make you sound like an asshole. But things need to be said, and questions need to be asked sometimes. It is better to speak too much than bury a brother because you didn't.

the second time i chopped was due to a skysurfing incident were my cut away cord had slipped over my knee and when i went into a sit spin it cut one of my bindings and instead of choping the board i tried to save the board and dumped my main that just got everything fucked up.

This sounds scary to me. Aren't 500 skydives recommended before learning to skysurf? And it sounds here like you had fewer than 200....

To answer your rhetorical question, I think if you're a safe skydiver who's just had a lot of malfunctions, then there's no such thing as "too many" cutaways.
Skydiving is for cool people only

>i had my third cut away this weekend. . . .

Sounds like only one was due to your packing. Not the end of the world, but it is probably a good time to review your packing technique with an experienced jumper or rigger. Average mal rate is between 1 in 300 and 1 in 1000, depending on whose stats you use.

> . . .the second time i chopped was due to a skysurfing incident . . .

You might want to wait a while longer on the skysurfing until you work out the other issues (dive planning, sit stability, packing.)

I have had one...
My 31st jump, and i couldnt unstoe a toggle...
So at 2 g's i said chop chop and bought a case of beer and the rigger got a bottle of jack...
I have came close a number of times after that but was able to correct the problems....
HAVE FUN...

Hmmm ... let's see ... This poster is advising you: "don't listen to the advice of someone who has knowledge and experience" ... I think I'd at least think about advice from

I don't quite see how the FF's comments make him an asshole...it doesn't sound like he was criticizing you for chopping, he said (according to you) that you might want to review your packing process. I would personally take that to mean he cares about you and your survival.

As far as whether or not 3 chops are too many...well, it's more than average. I'm not saying you shouldn't have chopped! You kept a clear head, and did what you needed to, so good for you!! However, one of your cutaways was due to the complications introduced by a board, and I would rethink whether or not I am really ready for the potential additional problems associated with that.

Blue skies!

Sounds like good timely advice. Don't take it personally. You may be doing something wrong.

I imagine it's not what he said, but the way he said it. Someone told me that 65% of all communication is non-verbal.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

yup i knew that. and he is a great flier and i respect what he says a great deal that is why it bothered me so.
a person hates to think that they are the ones being a danger to themselves, and sometimes it is very hard to take critism even when it is to help you. especially me. thanks again all and sorry for being an asshole. :$

I have over a hundred jumps but only 1 cut away. It was due to my rigger hooking up my new collapsable pilot chute up wrong causing it to collaps upon throw out. I had no other choice in my case with a collapsed pilot chute in tow.

A good buddy of mine has had nearly 5,000 jumps with only 9 cut aways all a result of CReW entanglements.

3 chops in just over 200 jumps there is a problem. Sorry to say it but maybe you should reflect on what your doing each and every jump. Then try to find what your doing wrong and correct it. Remember skydiving is as safe as you make it.

You never know how things will balance out. I have seen people with thousands of jumps never have a cutaway or just one then have three over a month long period:P

You may not have one for a thousand jumps now or you may three in the next two weeks. Just be ready no matter what. Be safe...
