Let me think and I am speaking under correction here. I am getting rusty with regards to my aircraft.

WW2
The Hawker Typhoon, originally developed as a fast interceptor was considered a failure at it's designated task. This aircraft was then 'armoured', re-equiped and turned into one of the best tank busters of the period. The Russian Sturmovik was a dedicated attack aircraft. Slow, armoured, tough as nails with excellent loiter time. The Soviets swore by it to the point that it became the most built aircraft of the period. The Nazies feared it above all.
The German Fw 190 D slotted into the same catagory. After 6 years of intense warfare all sides knew what CAS was...they were masters at it.

Vietnam
The US could not dust the old A1 Skyraider off fast enough when they realised that the F4's, F101's and Super Sabers were just too fast and had no real loiter time. Once again tough, heavy weapon load and extended time over target took precidence over speed and 'gadgets'.

South African Bush war
Aging Aermacchi 399 trainers were armoured up, bombed up and used to great effect. Where the Dasault Mirages had struggled with their high speeds and short legs.

Seems like the only thing we learn from history is that we don't learn from history.

It seems that the US Marines are about the only ones that have figured out that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. When the US Army was busy bringing in the new era of helo's, the Blackhawk ( Crashhawk) and the Apache, which teh majority of that fleet type was ground for some time, the Marines were improving on combat proven platforms, the UH-1 Iriquois (Huey) and the Bell Cobra. Which are still some of the baddest birds in the sky.

One of my buds is down in FL for flight training in the Corps and was telling me that the USMC is looking into putting a stronger engine in and quad blades on both the huey and the cobra, bad ass.

Also so let me get this straight he used the IR sensor on the mavrick as a FLIR unit?!?! do they teach that?

Nahh...but they have been doing it for years. The A-10 is pretty much a Day VFR aircraft that pilots have to learn how to fly in all weather and at night under NVG's. Since they have that nice IIR sensor hanging off the wing, might as well use it. The display is pretty damn small though. I'd say about a 5 inch circle.

but the AF has a fit anytime the army suggests getting back into fixed wing flight..

The Army never got out of fixed wing... they have many for "special" purposes... mostly King Airs but some that are bigger... the NG even has a big brother to the Skyvan - the Sherpa...

Back in the late 80's earily 90's when the AF started talking openly about dumping the A-10... there was lot's of talk about making CAS an Army mission... but, as you said the AF through a fit... CAS should be under the control and work regularly with the ground troops they support... I think the Marines do it this way with the AV-8B and AH-1S

Hey, you can call it a corporation...I ain't gonna argue. Heck, I work in the worst part of the AF for that...we ARE a corporation. We have to institute all that crap like TQM and "best practices" and ISO whatever just like all the contractors we work with.

I work 9 to 5, in a cubicle, at a computer, with finacial records and engineering drawings. Take down the "Kirtland AIr Force Base" and replace it with "Boeing" or Lockheed", and I'd never know the difference...
