skybytch 273 #2 September 19, 2002 QuoteHad to laugh at it though I wasn't laughing the other day when someone from work discovered they "had" this "virus." Managed to keep most everyone from deleting the file, but one person got it deleted before I could get the "it's a hoax" email to them. What a pain in the ass... wildblue 7 #3 September 19, 2002 try keeping a large company of idiots from doing that. I'm just waiting for someone to send an email like that with actual important files for the victim (moron) to delete. I've seen two variations of that - the other was suflnk.exe (or something like that)it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

lummy 4 #6 September 19, 2002 Please send out to all your buddies as soon as possible... Following these instructions will ensure that you will never get another virus Quote The following message was sent to us this morning regarding a virus which is automatically forwarded to anyone in your address book. Having checked our computer it would appear that we have also been infected and may have passed it on to you via our address book. Please follow the procedure below to check for the virus and remove it if necessary. Dear All, I am very sorry about this. A colleague's Address Book has been infected by a virus and it was passed on to my computer. My Address Book, in turn, has been infected. The virus ( called OUTLOOK) is not detected by Norton or McAfee anti-virus systems. The virus sits dormant for 14 days before damaging the system. It’ s sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or not you sent e-mails to your contacts. Here is how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it. 1. Go to Start, click on Find or Search option. 2. In the Files/Folders option, write the name OUTLOOK 3. Be sure you search your C: drive and any other drives you may have. 4. Click "Find now " 5. The virus has a Windows icon with the name Outlook.exe DO NOT OPEN IT 6. Go to edit; choose "select all" to highlight the file without opening it 7. Now go to file and select "delete". It will then go to the Recycle Bin 8. Go to the Recycle Bin and delete it there as well. IF YOU FIND THIS VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THAT THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS. I AM EXTREMELY SORRY ABOUT THIS I'M SURE THAT AS I HAVE FOUND IT EVERYONE IN MY ADDRESS BOOK WILL HAVE IT AS WELL. To do this open your e-mail client Hit yourself upside the head and say “DUH!!! I’m SHTUPID!!!” I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. eat sushi, get smoochieTTK#
Kris 0 #7 September 20, 2002 Yup, that one made it through my office. The aftermath after people found out it was a hoax was amusing. Everyone wanted that file back IMMEDIATELY! I had to tell several very frustrated people that unless they were Java developers, they didn't need it. Sigh...Move along. Galen 0 #8 September 20, 2002 Since I work at a location distant from the corporate office I got the job as the IT guy (because I knew how to check e-mail) in addition to my regular job. We always have the same people who get viruses. You know, the ones that don't think there could be anything wrong when the subject line says "I thought of you when I saw this" from someone named "Betsy". They never learn. Well, one the guys got a similar do-it-yourself virus and was so proud of himself for deleting these files. Thought he was a real guru. He also took it upon himself to go other workstations and get rid of this virus file that was surprisingly on these other PC's. His heart was in the right place. A little bit of knowledge is dangerous. That's why I choose to be a complete moron. Respect the Dolphin
