nws01 0 #1 September 19, 2002 I want to make a website to have pictures, videos, etc and I was wondering what I need to do it? I have absolutely no computer background so I need specifics from beginning to end. How much do they cost on average, etc? Thanks, Nathan
ernokaikkonen 0 #2 September 19, 2002 You can get started here ...and when you're done, I suggest a google search with search words like "html" and "tutorial". You'll find TONS of stuff... Erno
scottbre 0 #3 September 19, 2002 Having a website can be essentially free. Example However, when you want to get into hosting large amounts of videos and pics, that tends to require more bandwidth and storage space, which you usually have to pay more for. It's also gonna cost you a few bucks if you want your own domain name like: www.chromeboy.com as opposed to what the address might look like through a website hosting service: www.geocities.com/chromeboy That's just a super-condensed cliff's notes version, BTW. skybytch 273 #6 September 19, 2002 I had a free one on GeoCities. Was okay, but they really limit the bandwidth - so if you posted a page of pics and we all wanted to look at them we probably couldn't... That's why I got a paid one. Mine is hosted with Parcom, unlimited bandwidth, more storage than I need right now, email, etc. is under $20 every 3 months. They also got me my url - skybytch.com - for $15 for a year. jfields 0 #16 September 19, 2002 Nathan, I had this very discussion with a friend a couple months ago. Here is an excerpt from an e-mail I sent him... -------------------------------------------------------- I made a list of some helpful links. You can sign up for free web hosting and then just start playing around. If you feel like investing in a single book to start learning, the O'Reilly HTML book would be my recommendation. There are lots of web tutorials floating around the internet. A little searching would give you more than you can possibly read. General Helpful Web Sites: http://htmlgoodies.earthweb.com/tutors/master.html http://builder.com.com/ Background Textures: http://www.grsites.com/textures/ http://www.ip.pt/webground/main.html Books: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/jscript4/ http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/html5/ (I have third edition of the HTML book, but I'm sure the newer one is even better. This is a GREAT reference.) JavaScript Free Code: http://javascript.internet.com/ Software Tools for Web Editing: http://www.webattack.com/freeware/webpublish/ Free Web Hosting (but with ads) http://www.tripod.lycos.com/ One guy's site with phenomenal design and free code: http://www.twinhelix.com/dynamic.html Let me know how it goes. If you have any questions, just shoot them my way. I'm no web guru, but I'll do my best to answer. I've learned a lot through trial and error. Good luck! nws01 0 #18 September 19, 2002 Thanks everyone for your info and offers to help. I am going to take a look at a few and get some ideas. This will be a fun hobby! Homesite is one, I believe AOL has something but not sure about that and MS Frontpage. I know a lot of people don't like to use WYSIWYG programs but they are pretty nice for beginners. You can have a fully functional website in a few days. If you are just looking for a place to post pictures and cool information, MSN has customizable free communities and I believe Yahoo does as well. Here is an example of one. Sample I have no idea who Wendy is, I just happened to find this site when I did a search for skydive. I host all my own sites that way. You can get a decent web server in Linux, or in WindowsNT/Windows2000/XP Server. FrontPage 2002 is a good editor for beginners and it isn't that hard to setup and use if you already use Win2000. Although, I am a nerd and I write PHP and ASP code in emacs or in NOTEPAD.EXE still; also write ISAPI DLLs and COM objects for web applications... that's going off the deep end. ____________________________________________________________ I'm RICK JAMES! I actually got paid to learn HTML because they needed someone to take control of our unit's page. The course I took was an online-based one month course with two modules per week. It was simple, had great online instructor support, and only cost the unit like $50. Thing is, you can easily find the same teaching material all over the internet, as is evidenced in the many previous responses to your original post. Making a webpage is very simple using a WYSIWIG editor, but as was also stated in this thread, it can lead to some VERY dirty code. Without a base knowledge of HTML, you will never be able to un-fuck your shit if it ever goes awry. Man, I tell you what, I sure am glad that I took that course. I really like messing around with it now. Speaking of that, I really need to update my site with some new stuff!
