FallinWoman 1 #28 September 23, 2002 The only thing that would be different is that I would be less likely to jump in higher winds. I am fairly conservative about the winds I jump in now, but having a 290 square foot canopy over my head would make me even more so. Anne ~Anne I'm a Doll!!!! billvon 3,114 #29 September 23, 2002 >What would you do if you were forced to upsize by 100sq feet. Well, that would put me at 219 sq ft. That's smaller than my BASE canopy and my paraglider. As paraglider pilots are pulling manuevers that put JC and company to shame under 24 square meter paragliders, there is still plenty to learn and plenty you can do under a much larger canopy. It's always fun to talk to someone who is determined to downsize "so they can get good landings" and then show them video of someone getting a 100 foot planeout out of a Spectre 135. The longer I watch people fly parachutes in this sport, the more I realize that 75% of the landing performance comes from the pilot, not the parachute. drenaline 0 #30 September 23, 2002 Quoteif you were forced to upsize by 100sq feet I would go to 250, my student canopy was a 230 and it floated like crazy, so most probably will make lots of cross country and have lots of fun releasing the parachute after every landing cause that thing will carry me on my back to the next closest country. SkymonkeyONE 4 #32 September 23, 2002 QuoteThat would put me at a 197 square foot canopy.. Well, that would put me at 175 which is still almost 100 square feet smaller than my demo main and 200 square feet smaller than my tactical main. While a 175 is very large by my "HP" standards now, it used to be a racy size. I still test jump a lot of new mains that I set up for friends just getting their first equipment and have absolutely no problem surfing the dog piss out of something in the 175 range. Also, I did my first four stack under a 175. Chuck
hagar 0 #33 September 23, 2002 If I had to upsize to a 270 canopy, I think I would have started to practice accuracy landings. It wouldn't be as much fun to fly a parafoil as a Stiletto, but still, the art of accuracy landings could be usefull.--- PCSS #

Zennie 0 #43 September 23, 2002 Well, my first thought was "Never make it back from a shitty spot." Then I thought CRW or BASE. You could also have fun landing it in the backs of people's pickup trucks. Do hook turns at 100 feet. You just have to be creative. But no I wouldn't quit. For me the fun is in freeflying. Canopy size isn't going to change that (other than having a big honking container on my back). Yeah I like to swoop, but I'm in it for the flying. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Jessica 0 #46 September 23, 2002 QuoteI'd just get REALLY fat so that I could have a higher wingloading. That's what I'd do, too. This is like two separate questions -- for most of those of us with nonaggressive wingloadings, going up by 100 square feet would put us under ridiculously big canopies. For most of those with 2:1 or higher loadings, adding 100 square feet would still put them under a reasonably sized parachute. If I were jumping a 270, I'd start telecommuting to work from under canopy.Skydiving is for cool people only
Deuce 1 #47 September 23, 2002 Quotehmm... Install a crossbraced 69sqr/f reserve and thrashpack my 290 main Good one. You'd have to start paying somebody to chase your "main" and your freebag, though. Get one of those "tri" containers for demoing reserve cutaways. Smarty. Deuce 1 #50 September 23, 2002 Quoteah ah.. Stick to the rules.. The reserve goes up 100 feet too Well, crap. I'd get more comfortable shoes, cause that student-sized stuff is heavy. And I'd jump less, cause with the winds at my home DZ I'd be going backwards at touchdown, a LOT.
