it probably does make more sense to just buy one their used rigs and save $2000.

Personally, I would question that. Student gear gets beat all to hell. If you buy student gear, hve it thoroughly checked by a disinterested 3rd party....some rigger not associated with the DZ in any way. Is that saying the local rigger is dishonest? No, It's saying take the worry out of it.

Keep asking questions.

the gear is brand new, less than a month old. They said you can buy one, so I'm assuming 5K or so instead of 7K.

Getting it checked anyways would be reassuring.

So this DZ buys a rig, reserve, AAD and main and uses it for a month and then wants to sell it.
Huh....

Could you ask them to buy some new gear for me too? :P

I don't understand why they would sell them, I know it was a huge reason I chose that DZ over any others and I'm sure it would attract a lot of newcomers. It is a wealthy drop zone operation though, everything over there is brand new.

Is it possible to train for a class A license with your own parachute? I am looking at a chute from sunpath and it says it is a entry level student parachute.

I feel like I'd almost rather learn with my own chute while I can with instructors who can answer my questions and give me confidence using my own gear rather than get my class A and then go at it on my own. Or am I just rationalizing a way to prematurely buy really cool equipment?

I am posting this with hesitation out of fear of being chastised so please go easy on me.

I really want to start doing this and I no longer have any legitimate excuses to put this off any longer. But I still have that 'sick to my stomach' feeling and am feeling guilty about wanting to do this even though I know it's really safe.

Going through AFF use the school's gear. After you are licensed, if you have $6000 - $7000 to burn, then buy whatever gear you want. Other people here on the forums have done it. Heck, even some dude with about 30 -40 jumps ( i know he didn't have 100+ jumps) went and got his own rig.
