Harju's Sinus Operation Update

Recommended Posts

Just a heads-up on my sinus operation (I postponed it so I could go to Rantoul). Got back from 3rd Post-Op a little while ago (septoplasty 3 wks ago today). The surgeon says my sinuses look great and that I can exercise now, but he wants me to wait two more weeks before skydiving again. I was having sinus infections one after the other this year after it got progressively worse over the past three years, so I decided to get it done while I still had health insurance.

The operation was a breeze. Got it done on a Thursday, and it was a bit painful when the anesthesia wore off, but not seriously; kinda like the residual ache one feels in the aftermath of a brain-freeze. I had painkillers of course, but didn't really need them, in fact, I had a beer the very next day. I didn't have black eyes either.

I was back at work the following Wednesday, had the splints out the day after that, and flew to Saskatoon that same evening, with the surgeon's provisional okay and orders to use a vasoconstrictor like Afrin as a precaution against hemorrhaging (Stupid, I know, for me to fly so soon after serious surgery, but the magazine wanted the story about Michel Fournier, and I was there when he almost made it).

If you're having chronic sinus problems like mine (which seemed to coincide with skydiving), see an Otolaryngology (ear, nose, throat) specialist, and if surgery is recommended, go for it. Endoscopic septoplasty is highly advanced now, and a few days of post-op discomfort is more than made up for by the relief you'll get from sinus problems. Worked for me...;)

So, did he go up, and not make it or did he not go up at all because of weather?

He got weathered out. He's slated to try again in May 2003.
