narcimund 0 #2 September 28, 2002 Oh thank you. I was getting so sick of people complaining about their jobs. Look folk, if you don't like it, CHANGE IT! I love my job. 7 years ago I realized I hated my job and decided the only way I'd ever be happy is to own my own company. Three days later I was fired and figured, "now or never." So here I am, the owner (well, 1/2 owner with my lover) of a webdesign/webhosting business. We're small, which gives us huge flexibility and personality. We're profitable, which means we can do things we want to do outside of work. We make all the decisions and almost always agree. We choose who to work with (and who NOT to work with!) We pick our projects. We learn what we want to learn. I love my job. I wouldn't trade it for any other job. The only thing I'd trade for is to have enough money that I could be less professional and more experimental. We're working towards that :) First Class Citizen Twice Over

That I have the latitude to do what I want, where I want, when I want. Yes, I actually worked from a dock this summer. That I have a crutial role in a company that depends on me. That I'm challenged daily to expand my knowledge and understanding. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Kris 0 #5 September 28, 2002 I get to travel, a LOT! My coworkers know how to do their jobs and they do it well. A bottomless training budget. After just one year my boss is giving me a promotion along with my review so it is going to be a huge raise. I can work with our field locations, I can mess around in the lab, or I can go play in the datacenter for the day. The job has a lot of variety. We have field support offices in every major market so there is ample opportunity to transfer. And # 1: My boss isn't constantly looking over my shoulder. He trusts us to get the job done and doesn't have a fear of delegation. KrisSky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
quade 4 #6 September 28, 2002 Now, now. The question on the other thread was "What do you hate about your job?", not "Why do you hate your job?". My guess is that even people that LOVE their jobs have one or two issues that could be made a bit better. I fell in love with my Company many, many years ago. I'm extremely loyal to certain aspects of it, but over the years I've seen changes that have ruined other aspects of it. Still, on balance, the pluses outweigh the minuses -- somedays not by much -- you don't want to talk to me on those days. But for the most part I'd rather work there than not because of the investment I have emotionally to the Company I fell in love with and the hope that the things I don't like can be improved.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
airgord 1 #7 September 28, 2002 I love getting up at 5am, going to the loft and stretch, watching the dirt dive, gearing up and going to the tram, saying good morning to Tom the world famous tram driver, waiting for the Otter at the loading area, waving a good morning to Rick or Monk or whoever is flying today, sitting by the door and watching the sunlight on the desert floor, looking back inside the aircraft and seeing the look of concentration on teammates faces as they visualize the skydive, putting my helmet on at the 1 minute call, quick gear check and then open the door on the amber light, climbout on the green, mental high fives to the outside people, Outside center gives the count, we go, beautiful 8 way chunk, the key comes, the sky dance begins........... Yeah, thats what I like about my job.

skybytch 273 #21 September 28, 2002 What do I love about my job? I get to talk to skydivers about skydiving all day long. My coworkers are skydivers. The office atmosphere is great; we laugh and joke and talk about jumping. It's way cool to come in on Monday and talk about the fun jumps we did over the weekend. Jumping with my coworkers is loads of fun too. My bosses are skydivers. They trust me enough to go off on vacations and leave me to handle the business. They don't second guess my decisions. They bought me a new main as a bonus. And they don't mind that I read and post on dropzone.com on their time. My customers are awesome. It's pretty rare that I get one that is less than cool. Hey, they're all skydivers too! I love that I get to help people choose their equipment, then I get to hear how much they love it when they get to jump it. I get weekends off. I don't have to be to work at some ridiculously early hour, nor do I have to work late into the night. It's a non-physical labor type job. I get paid for using my brain instead of my muscles. Variety. I don't do the same thing all day long, every day. Did I mention that I get paid to talk to skydivers all day long? Like I said in the other thread, the only thing I don't like is the paycheck. If only you all would be willing to pay list price for gear... if you'd just do that I could be making bank. Nobody pays list price for containers or canopies - those are discounted at least 20% from the base list price. See, like I said - I've got great customers! ernokaikkonen 0 #24 September 28, 2002 I have two jobs really. Weekdays 8-16, I'm a webmaster for a government office. Boring beyond comprehension. The good bit is that I get to spend most of my time at DZcom, since no-one really knows what I should do or how long it should take. Second, I do some php-programming paid by the hour on evenings and weekends. That's sort of cool, when I get to implement some new features to software. Sucks that I have to debug them too... But that's something I actually like to do, since I don't have to do it all day every day.Erno
narcimund 0 #25 September 28, 2002 Oh, you mean that sort of list price. The kind you don't even pretend to ask for. Yeah, I love my gear bag. I only wish I'd chosen fuschia instead of hot pink. It doesn't match the rest of my gear the way I wanted. Of course I gather you object to pink in any form. Oh well. I can't win.
