how many jump tickets did that cost you?:P

Having 2 computers for 2 people living together is nearly useless if only one could have access to the net at a time. That said the entire set-up was under $200 but I already had a wireless network card laying around.

Yep, I thought I was "high tech" being able to do e-mail on my phone and use it as a modem to my lappie until I realized that every single person in Japan and most of Europe (especially Finland) have WAY more sophisticated hardware for cheaper than I pay for basic service.

Ya know, it's not too hard to make the 802.11b network moderately secure. At least it's not hard using the Apple software -- it's just a click of a preference and you get (I think) 128 bit encryption and a (relatively) secure network.

I don't think the average 12-year-old kid next door is going to break that -- maybe some kid with some serious skills, but not the average one.

WEP is easy to break if you know the tools of the trade and have a week to killI've only had the patience to crack my own key at home. I used to war drive for free access points and have a list of some i can use on the road in town if I'm jonesin for access on my laptop.

128 is still more then enough to deter most people and its turned on with a simple flick of a button on every piece of wireless hardware I've delt with. Also most newer stuff can lock it down to mac address's in terms of connection privalages.

WEP2 is better by far.

The best one right now that you can get is LEAP. But, you can only use Cisco hardware. Good feature is that the key rotates constantly so even if it is guessed correctly, you're only exposed for a short period before it changes again.
