the tape definitely showed him go for his handles to open, then pause and try again...

Try again? Was the rig going to suddenly appear on his back? I feel bad for the guy, but that's ridiculous! If I ever make the same mistake, please ridicule me in death.

I am _EXTREMELY_ anal about chest straps and leg straps!!!! in case I only have one arm ***

A couple of weekends ago I was on the ground waiting for our load to go up, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a newbie and another friend of his rushing to the plane to make the next load. The guy had donned his rig with his right arm going between the harness and the right risers (Try to picture this: the riser cover opened and the risers slipped from the harness; when he put on the rig his shoulder was sitting under the harness strap, and the risers were "routed" under his arm pit). I obviously stopped him and asked him to take the rig off; he was pretty pissed off at me because he wasn't going to make the load. My only choice was to hold him until the DZ manager came over and take care of things.
It's hard to pull when your arm has been ripped off by your risers.

This is so F&*ked up, I'm not even sure if they're true. I can maybe understand WALKING to the plane without your rig, if you're preoccupied with your camera. But the whole ride up, & then actually getting out?? I don't know, it seems too hard to believe. & some of the stories about it happening sound a little too perfect to be true...for example...how could just the LAST part of the tape be destroyed by the impact, & not the rest of it?? And how come these never come up in the incident reports in Parachutist?

Anyway I hear at least on some English DZs they make all the jumpers on the next load stand in a sort of corral & everyone checks everyone elses' gear & initials the manifest list verifying that they HAVE been checked! Sounds like it might be a hassle, but it might prevent a lot of problems...

And while we're on that note, I think people should be MUCH more forward about offering and asking for and giving gear checks!!

You would be surprised how pissed some people get when you point out something wrong with a rig.

Case in point, we were at Lost Prairie and Derek and I were going to do a 2 way sit fly. Well as everyone was going to the door he saw a girl with either her reserve handle or cut away handle folded under her main lift webbing. (sorry I can't remember) She had a tight rig like I do and he had her grabbed so it was fixed.

Well when I got to the ground some old timer who claimed he had been in the sport 20 years said that Derek was some yahoo who didn't know anything and cause of him their exit went to shit. Then he proceded to pat me on the head and tell me that he has been in the sport long enough to know that those thing fix themselves in the air.

I then told him attitudes like that are dangerous, and since he is so confident in his assisment of the issue that there was Derek and I'm possitive that he would like to know that what he did was the wrong thing. Of course the guy hauled ass away, cause it sure is easier to spout of to some chick than some guy who will definately tell you what is what.
Fly it like you stole it!

Speedy, ever check out some of the old belly mount reserves and the old recording units on the chest set ups? Scary how similar that look. I'm sure this made parachutist, in the 80's whe nit was to have happened...

As for the tape, I know that one can happen from picking up parts from a PC-1 that stayed in freefall after the owner deployed. The tape ends about 4 seconds before impact. Every thing that was stretched out was destroyed in the impact and only material 2 or 3 coils in was viewable.

And tomorrow is a mystery

It's true. It did happen.

As for the issue of the tape . . .

Video tape is remarkably durable in a crash as long as it has been wound on the take-up spool. The video tape that hasn't quite made it there is very vulnerable. So, it's not uncommon in an accident to have good data from the recorders until a few seconds before impact (because that's on the spool), but the stuff that's still on the record heads and on it's way to the spool can get crunched up pretty bad. A little video cassette surgery can recover the part that's good, but -nothing- can make a really crunched up piece of video tape playable.

skycat,

you're absolutely right, that guy had a pisspoor attitude. some assholes think they're god because they have a few hundred or thousand skydives. Not only do they get complacent & sloppy, they create an atmosphere that inhibits other people from taking extra safety precautions.>:( This is bullshit. . A little more humility might save someones life.

Oh, I've seen some really screwed up stuff - nothing quite that bad, but bad enough that missing a rig wouldn't suprise me. People jumping with their reserve handles tied down. One guy with an _open_main_container_ who wanted someone to just hold it closed until he was out. Two jumpers who took their rigs off to fool around a minute before jump run - and who I had to cajole into putting their rigs on before I opened the door. They wanted me to open it first. Many people drinking and doing drugs before jumping.

If you ever hear of something stupid someone did, and you think to yourself "no one could be that dumb" - believe me, they can be. There is no limit to how stupid people can be.
